Dr. Idris Evans was one of my closest friends from medical school. It's been troubling to see big accounts on X use this tragedy to cravenly push their various agendas, so I wanted to share a bit about Idris and the GoFundMe for his wife and kids. Idris was one of the best humans that I had the opportunity to know. If you were lucky enough to have ever met him, he probably made you laugh. He had one of the quickest and sharpest wits. When we were in school together, he was like my older brother. We would commute every day from Center City Philadelphia out to East Falls. He introduced me to great music. He taught me about love and relationships. He introduced me to Dogfish Head 90 Minute after our first set of exams in Year 1. I still think about him any time I have one. Idris was a big prankster. He would come over and rearrange the furniture. Or leave piles of shaving cream in random places that were hard to reach or not discovered until days later. One time, he took my mattress and shoved it into the stairwell. It was lodged in there so well, it was almost impossible to get it out. He was also generous. He'd come over and make amazing dinners. Or just show up to hang. After school, Idris chose one of the hardest professions in pediatric critical care. If you can imagine, you see a lot of young children pass away in that kind of job. You suffer that experience to save the ones you can. Idris was smart and diligent, the kind of person you'd want working in critical care. He also had the heart and mindset to seek out that hardship, to offer himself in service to others, and then to go even further, to lead and teach others in the field as well. He leaves behind an amazing wife, who has dedicated her life to helping others as well, and two young boys who will have to make sense of life without their father. X doesn't seem like the right place to share all this, especially given that Idris was no fan of social media. But I've seen so much craven opportunism, the kind of thing that he would have hated even more than social media, that I felt I had to offer something better in his memory. He spent his life caring for others and their families. Any support you can offer to his family, even just sharing this post to drown out the noise, would be great: gofund.me/5f92fc8a8

People in the comments acting like this is impossible to find. @pitdesi was 37 and generally met all of the other criteria when I met him. I’m able to say that because there is no minimum height listed. If there was…
wrote out a list of who I’m looking for. X, work your magic. non negotiable - 35 to 42 y/o - healthy masculine - smart, funny, lighthearted - provider/protector mentality - post economic (still hardworking) - must be kind, generous, thoughtful - no kids yet, decidedly wants kids - on the healing path (history of serious commitment ex therapists, books, retreats) - can meet anywhere but will not date unless live in the same city - fit and sober because you care about your health strongly preferred - no prev marriages or engagements - works in tech (comfortable with risk and career is blended into personal life)

If, like my mom, you’ve been looking for even more opportunities to hear from Sheel, I’ve got some great news: He’s starting a weekly podcast!
I'm co-hosting a new weekly show with @Kantrowitz, brought to you by the same folks at Hubspot who produce @myfirstmilpod! We'll talk about the biggest stories in tech and business every week. It's going to be fun, Alex and I disagree a lot :) Super stoked to share more!

Leaving tomorrow for 6 weeks of travels, including the itinerary below. Let us know if you have any recs!
Replying to @ramit
Our plan for my wife's recharge from Meta I’ll still be working (thank you Starlink) 1) European campervan trip We got a campervan (with bathroom, bedroom, kitchen), will drive through the Alps, northern Italy, the French Riviera, northern Spain, and Portugal. Planned stops include the Dolomites, Lake Garda, Verona, Cinque Terre, Portofino, Nice, Provence, Carcassonne, San Sebastián, Burgos, Córdoba, and Seville. We’ll mostly stay in the campervan, but we also booked nice hotels along the way for a change of pace 2) Portugal reset After Seville, we’ll spend time in Portugal: the Algarve, Comporta/Carvalhal, the Douro Valley, and Porto for São João, which is Porto’s midsummer festival. 3) Camino week Then we’ll walk the final stretch of the Camino Portugués Central route. About a week of walking through small towns. not particularly expensive, should be a nice change of pace.

In this comment section: people who can’t seem to fathom that a person could afford something and choose not to purchase it. 🤯
Some of the richest folks on the flight happily walk by your business class seat on their way to 21A.

The best defense is a good offense.
BREAKING: @johncoogan is exploring the possibility of suing the lawyer who successfully argued Meta is designed to be addictive for making him addicted to reading about the case. He claims that learning about fines against tech companies is "ruining his mood entirely."

IG feature request: when someone “likes” a reel of a toddler saying something impossibly grown up, they should have to answer whether they think it’s real. Do my friends like the AI slop or do they not know it’s slop. I must know.

Re Minneapolis: Even if the car was a lethal weapon and the officer was entitled to defend himself, does the defensive action have to be reasonably capable of stopping the threat? Shooting the driver doesn’t stop the car. Compare to: shooting the wheels, running away, etc.

Epstein email release is making me nostalgic for my document review days (something I would never have thought impossible). Give me a doc review platform and 8.5 billable hours and I’m sure I can find the smoking gun.

If there is anything I hope Zohran carries forward from Obama’s legacy, it’s the annual playlist. Patiently waiting for the Afrobeats meets Bollywood meets Bushwick bangers.

the h1-b debate is incredibly noisy because two things are true 1. h1-b has been abused by body shops for at least 2 decades by companies like tata 2. there are many incredibly qualified people who have moved here under an h1-b the problem is that people outside of sf are incredibly likely to interact with tata like shops at f500 and very unlikely to interact with the incredibly qualified individuals you'll find at leading startups/tech companies and people that live in sf are incredibly unlikely to interact with tata like shops and are close friends with the highly qualified individuals here on h1-bs

New form of racism unlocked with “Indians in America are not as talented as white Americans.” Weird food, bad smells — that’s the classic 90s racism I’m used to. But dumb?? That’s a new one!

People forget that the 1st amendment is a check on government, not on the public. So if you’re “canceled” and people stop watching your TV show? Not a violation. If your show is canceled because the president told the FCC to fine your network? Well now we’re getting somewhere.
I don’t particularly like Kimmel, but I think it’s extremely disturbing that the FCC made ABC cancel the show over this clip. It’d be fine if ABC cancelled it on their own, but feels like the government is now regulating speech

As a childless person going to Burning Man with my Burner husband next week, I feel the way people seem to when vacationing with kids. Is it really a “vacation” if I’m going to be running after a (man)child all week??

Zohran wants to freeze rents on 2M units, a well-intentioned but absolutely terrible idea that could erase what makes NYC special. Bombay is a cautionary tale. Rent was frozen in 1949, and today, those neighborhoods have almost no functioning rental market. Only the ultra-rich or legacy tenants remain, and many of the buildings, once among the city's nicest, are literally falling apart because landlords can't afford to maintain or rent them. What started as tenant protection eventually turned into a lose-lose situation. The only real winners are those lucky enough to have locked in a rent-controlled deal decades ago. One of the richest people I know pays $8 a month for a $6 million penthouse in the best part of town. His grandfather moved in during the '50s. The landlord can’t afford repairs, so my friend pays out of pocket to maintain the building. In other cases, no one pays, and buildings collapse, sometimes killing people. Landlords forgo maintenance. Tenants free-ride on each other. Even if some are willing to contribute, big repairs require structural changes to the entire building, and tenants often lack the legal authority or incentives to get it done. Rent control created a handful of winners but wrecked these parts of the city. Tens of thousands of units are still locked into mid-century prices. Landlords can’t raise rents, can’t evict, and often don’t rent at all, because once someone moves in, you’re stuck with them for life. There are even movies and TV shows in India about landlords unable to live in their own homes (my favorite episode of "Flop Show" iykyk). Today, nearly 15% of Bombay’s housing stock sits vacant. Redevelopment is almost impossible in the rent controlled areas, and only the ultra-rich can afford to live in Marine Drive, Colaba, etc. Instead of creating an affordable and vibrant city, rent control has left South Bombay as an enclave for the super rich. A policy meant to protect tenants ended up gutting the middle class and freezing the city in time. So... New York should pay attention... Do NOT elect this man - he might have a great social media game but has terrible policies! Freezing rents might feel like a win today, but it can lock cities into decay for generations.
Our new ad is now live. Freeze the rent.

Please read this 3-0 ruling written by Reagan appointee Harvie Wilkinson, one of the US's most respected conservative judges, a defender of executive power. It excoriates the Trump Admin's ignoring of the 9-0 SCOTUS order requiring it to "facilitate" Abrego Garcia's release.👇
