I really don't love the "we need less parent coaches" argument in youth hockey. Are there some bad ones who only care about their kid? Yes. Most parent coaches I know are actually harder on their kids than the others. Rather than saying we need less parent coaches, we should be saying how can we support parent coaches more? Most parent coaches are volunteers with jobs, other kids, and tons of other responsibilities that make coaching just from a time standpoint difficult. If we as organizations and a hockey community as a whole put more emphasis on making parent coaches lives easier, rather than leaving them out to dry with no support, youth hockey would be in a much better position to thrive.
