In a new article in @apsrjournal, @sarahsunnbush, @DonnoDaniela and I show that autocrats can use women’s rights to enhance their reputation for democracy and prospects for foreign aid among democracy promoters and aid officials - also in the absence of electoral liberalization.
From our new issue: "International Rewards for Gender Equality Reforms in Autocracies" by Sarah Bush (@sarahsunnbush), Daniela Donno (@donnodaniela), and Pär Zetterberg (@zetterberg_par) #ASPRNewIssue. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Interestingly legislative gender quotas are not so strongly associated with perceived democracy.

The results of our experiment surprised me. They might you too!
Replying to @kristenkao
@kristenkao, @EllenMLust, @MarwaShalaby12, & @chagai_weiss's findings in patriarchal societies suggest that gender-balanced legislatures increase perceptions of legitimacy, supporting extant literature found in Western democracies. #APSR #APSRFirstView ow.ly/Zk8Y50PIXgU

New research on governments can use shady election observers to limit protests. I’m Happy to see this working paper in the @UCIGCC series!
In this working paper, Kelly Morrison, @BurcuSavun3, @DonnoDaniela, and Perisa Davutoglu find that competing election observation mission judgments increase uncertainty in electoral misconduct and the reliability of #election observers themselves. ucigcc.org/publication/worki…
