Lesser Scaup on the south basin of Staines Reservoir today. The absence of wind & the welcome winter sunshine made it unofficially the warmest November day on the causeway since records began. ☀️
Dopplegangers: Pitta Sordida, the Western Hooded Pitta, inexplicably given the Sordida epithet translating as “shabby” or “dull” & Justin Currie of @DelAmitri who made the mundanity & monotony of everyday existence in the 1980s inexplicably beautiful in “Nothing Ever Happens”
Dopplegangers: Chloris Chloris, the Eurasian Greenfinch relies on Alder tree seeds as a winter food source & Justin Vernon @boniver, Vernon meaning “place of alders”, who gave us Bon Iver, Bon Iver and I,I. All the best things are named twice.
The fabulous @throwingmuses in the barn at 🌞 @Krankenhausfest & in the tent at 🌧️ @EOTR. @kristinhersh expressed her love of the Dorset 🐑, no mention of the Cumbrian 🐄 though !
Waited 35 years to hear those magical Galaxie 500 songs played live again. @WarehamDean with @SeaPowerBand @Krankenhausfest simply sensational. 🌊🔥
Dopplegangers: the American Robin scorching its breast as it carried the last flame saving humanity from the winter snow & @WarehamDean of Galaxie 500 who gifted us Snowstorm on the masterly On Fire album. With @SeaPowerBand @Krankenhausfest this Friday. Beyond excited 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dopplegangers: Raven, confidants to Odin, the God’s gatherers of knowledge & Ozzy Osbourne who gave us Odin’s Court; “Misty horizons block your vision of the world. But the raven's eyes will show you all you need to know” Rest easy Oz.
The O-Döpp was so excited to book Krankenhaus tickets. We were then fit to burst with excitement when @throwingmuses & @iamheartworms were announced. But now @WarehamDean !?!?! We are ON FIRE 🔥!!!!
Dopplegangers: Blue-bellied Roller of the west African savannah, Roller feathers are used to symbolise the union of marriage in their traditional use as wedding rings & seminal rock and roller Deborah Harry of @BlondieOfficial who gave us Union City Blues. Both atomic. #birds
Dopplegangers: Gray-winged Blackbird found in the montane forests of SE Asia, often solitary, occasionally seen in flocks & Phoebe Bridgers solo Stranger in the Alps, sometimes seen grouping with @xboygeniusx #birds
Derek Jarman’s garden; a pharmacopoea. Perhaps that’s why I thought I saw @Manics Nicky Wire wandering close by today. What a busie old foole I am.
Splendid @SeaPowerBand “live rehearsal” @LewesConClub last night. Attendees @brightfest @brightdome tonight are in for a right treat. See you there.
Always exciting add a new @SeaPowerBand patch to the collection. Looking forward to Saturday @Islington_AH
(Still missing two for a complete set - respect to those who can identify the missing ones. Love to those who’ll donate them !)
Dopplegangers: The Mono tribe of the Sierra Nevada believed the California Condor seized humans, cut off their heads & drained their blood to flood Ground Squirrel’s home. Condor derives from the Quechua word kuntur, the first syllable of which seems particularly apt.
Dopplegangers: The excellent @guardian interview with Wreckless Eric Goulden (Goulden being a variant of golden) brought to mind the Northern Flicker, Colaptes auratus, translating as “chiseller ornamented with gold”. The O-Dopp Krü would go the whole wide world to see them both.
Just so proud of this guy. Eric in today’s Guardian, interviewed by the wonderful Alexis Petridis theguardian.com/music/2023/a…
