What if we treated car crashes like plane crashes? wfae.org/crime-justice/2023-…. #VisionZero If car crashes resulting in injury or death of an individual garnered the same attention by our collective conscious as an airplane crash, #VisionZero is possible despite the naysayers. – at Long Beach, CA

The system treats fatal car crashes as a matter of course—nothing can be done to prevent the next tragedy... right? Wrong. After a young man died trying to cross this intersection, a team of residents is doing everything in their power to make it safer. bit.ly/3Enz8Ua

“The fundamental problem … with roads … is they’re being asked to serve other users when they are clearly built exclusively to maximize car speed. Putting in crosswalks that take 30 seconds to cross, daring pedestrians to play “Frogger” with no medians to pause and putting striped bike lanes makes no sense.
“Unprotected bike lanes on a 45-mile-per-hour road is a recipe for disaster. The cyclists have no chance at 45 miles an hour if they’re hit by a car. I mean, we’ll be talking about another studio and about another fatality with that piece,” Erfurt said.”

The most commonly applied traffic engineering methodology says you should not put a pedestrian signal here unless there are already at least 20 pedestrians crossing. But people are never going to cross here unless there’s a signal. It’s like a traffic engineering zen koan

Small efforts like this can be enough to get the attention of residents and public officials to design safer streets. Change starts with YOU!

The broader picture is that the US roads are 2-5 times more dangerous than other similarly wealthy countries and official policies, including laws, make reducing speeds difficult or illegal To reduce #TrafficViolence we need a paradigm shift on #SaferSpeeds

New report finds that over 8,000 pedestrians were killed on US roadways in 2022. Jimmy Carter was president the last time that happened. ghsa.org/resources/Pedestria…

First we replaced these two that were smashed by cars. A local man told us that the one in front of the Amtrak station was hit by street racers – at Charlotte, NC

Big day at Charlotte Douglas International Airport — groundbreaking of a new $1B runway, which accounts for a third of the airport's $3.5B capital investment project called Destination CLT. The fourth parallel runway, as the project is called, is expect to be complete in 2027.

Leaving #CNU31 a little early for a son’s birthday. This @NewUrbanism conference was one of the best. 1330 people, many quite young. Great meeting @Tesho13 and many others. I gotta say, after some touring, #CLT #Charlotte has won me over. Amazing progress. I’d live here.

We know, and data shows, that driving at higher speeds increases the severity of injuries if there is a crash. That’s why we’re reducing speed limits on six streets along the High Injury Network. #VisionZero
