My latest adventure onto the continent. More of the Strasbourg 67400s, as well as the Zurich LION 420s and plenty of Nez Casses across Chambery and the Riviera.

Earlier this month saw 37275 make a few trips on the Dartmouth Steam Railway between Paignton and Kingswear. A rare outing for such a fine beast!

The game is on again, a lover or a friend. A big thing or a small, the winner takes it all!

A real blast from the past this morning. 1st September 2014, 379007 and an unidentified classmate make their way through Wickford on a working from Southend back to the GEML. Presumably this was a test run of some sort, but I have no information whatsoever.

The former Greater Anglia 321s seem to be back in the spotlight, with Varamis Rail returning to the network after a period with no operations. I really do miss these trains on the GEML, the last workings (under their own power) were all the way back in March 2024.

A few more photos from the Bluebell railway diesel gala, celebrating 40 years of Network SouthEast. Honestly what an event, heres for next year back at the Bluebell Railway!

The new Alstom Adessia Stream trains seem pretty good, and look to be well suited to the semi-fast regional workings across the trans pennine. They seem like something closer to a Coradia than what we have in the UK already.

EPB preservation group 2-EPB 5759 and MLVs 9001 & 9002 at the Bluebell railway diesel gala. For most of the gala they were paired with resident E3040 and visiting GBRf 73128, with the exception of a few runs when the MLVs were given a chance to run under their own battery power.

1980s locomotive power at the Bluebell Railway diesel gala, with a massive variety of locomotives from the tiny 03179 to the massive 50026 all operating last weekend.

Network Rail TCMU1 153379 through Burnham-on-Crouch this morning, a rare move in daylight as these trains usually run at night. Today however it ran in the path of the Greater Anglia 09:15 out and 10:05 back, as the line is currently blocked overnight for track repairs.

Day 3 at the Mangapps August bank holiday gala, with the visiting GER 229 taking centre stage for a whopping 7 runs. Unfortunatley 7/9 locos ran as a result, with 03158 (which was ready on a set but we ran out of time) and 31105 missing from the roster.

Day 1 of the Mangapps August bank holiday gala yesterday. We managed 7/7 locos out with 03 D2081, 03156, 03399, 04 11103, 04 D2325, 31105 and 31233 all out to play across a 5 hour running day. More today with steam locomotives Ger No. 229 and Bagnall No. 2613 also to appear.

*Steam locomotives subject to crew availability. Diesel locomotives subject to the usual Mangapps caveats. Unfortunately I'm not able to attend today, so more to follow tomorrow!

From the archives: 37401 and 37425 take a break at Manchester Victoria sitting under the Arena during a charter back in 2023. I believe this was the last passenger working for the class under DRS, before their sale at the end of the year.

I enjoyed the great value pullman experience on the Bluebell as well as their Southern theme, giving them top spot. The K&ESR is a bit of a hidden gem and well worth a visit when both locos are out, second place.

The NNR have something great in 37032 but the 31 also deserves more attention, the interesting DMU fleet is also worth seeing. The day I visited the Spa Valley services were not running to Eridge and heavily delayed, saying that it feels like there is a missing spark, last place.

Wannabe passengers who want to use East West Rail are being prevented by your executives spurious safety concerns. Perhaps think of those passengers who want to use this new railway rather than doing more politically motivated agitating.
RMT calls for ‘root and branch’ review following more power outages RAIL union RMT called for a root and branch review of railway operational control centres following another outage forcing most CrossCountry train services to be cancelled. The power outage in Birmingham affected its control centre, resulting in many of the systems used to manage the railway being unavailable. Private operator Arriva runs Cross Country services which have yet to be taken in-house under plans for Great British Railways (GBR). RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that passengers and rail workers should not have to bear the brunt of another week of travel chaos due to insufficient back-up systems. “We clearly need a full root and branch review of critical areas of railway operational control centres to ensure they remain unaffected by power outages,” he said.
