Expect a posting lull at this sardonic, European security policy 𝕏… for some account housekeeping: given a febrile world’s certainty post-Nov5th. The clergyman brigand Dr Syn😆pronounced S-I-N😉who Russell Thorndike chronicled — as the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh — shall return!

It's good to contextualize the zeitgeist Russell Brand populated as a hyper-libidinous weird male (certainly no role model to any I knew) both genders culturally—remember too, this was the time of popular atheism, vanquishing the spiritual—reached a zenith of the physical as sex.

I never tire of this scene. Clouseau investigating the Fassbender house might be one of the funniest ten minutes ever committed to film. A lesser comic actor would overreact how much it hurts, but Sellers’ genius is to downplay it and move on, pretending it didn’t happen. Incredible.

Happy days at Guardian Towers. Remind me, which columnists did Kath Viner drive out of the paper? Talcum X? Russell the Rapist? Oh, I remember now. It was the feminists. All three of us:

There's more than a modicum of difference between 1000s, literal 1000s of gang-raped schoolgirls PLEADING with police/social care to act—their files only revisited decades later—and one’s bravery as a grown woman being keeping schtum for 27yrs until TV turns: on your trophy fuck.

The early 2010s, when Russell Brand’s reputation was at its peak, were an unlovely period in recent British history, especially media culture. The worst aspects of Brand’s conduct had already manifested themselves in the preceding decade, but this did not prevent his subsequent elevation into something approaching a public intellectual. Narcissistic kidults were celebrated as insightful truth-tellers; performative, self-righteous indignation was mistaken for intellectual seriousness, loudness for courage, certainty for knowledge, and self-dramatisation for independence of mind. More established forms of informed, measured and thoughtful judgment, refined through experience and reflection, were increasingly dismissed as dull or reactionary. The prominence, in different ways, of figures such as Owen Jones, Laurie Penny, Katie Hopkins and Milo Yiannopoulos, followed later in the decade by Charlotte Church as a political activist, Kerry-Anne Mendoza, Aaron Bastani and Ash Sarkar, reflected a wider celebration of adolescent modes of behaviour in adults. These figures exhibited different combinations of impulsiveness, ostentatious defiance and attention-seeking, too often mistaken for intellectual and moral courage. In Brand's case, the narcissism cultivated and indulged by much of the media was that of a man seemingly so in love with himself, so convinced of his own irresistible appeal, that he could scarcely comprehend the possibility that anyone might say ‘no’ to him. This is not to associate any of these other figures with Brand’s criminal conduct, but to identify the wider media culture in which his celebrity flourished. There are connections here with a wider political culture of knee-jerk responses, impatience with complexity and a need for emotionally satisfying certainties and slogans, which found expression in aspects of both Corbynism and the Brexit campaign, and which persists today in different populist forms around the Greens and Reform.

Alwyn Turner's "All In It Together" is a masterful but harrowing chronicle of all these sorts of moments in the lead up to Brexit. I don't think we've properly reckoned with the period
Worth remembering that Russell Brand performed at the London Olympics closing ceremony dressed as Willy Wonka singing 'I Am The Walrus' on top of a Ken Kesey-style Magic Bus...

>>Nobody's suggesting we retvrn to the past and put Mary Whitehouse in charge of broadcasting rules I BEG TO DIFFER Mrs Whitehouse was as 💯% right about childhood innocence being erased by UK broadcasters' venality as Sen. McCarthy was far-Left infiltration of US institutions!
I think the whole Russell Brand affair raises some uncomfortable questions about how permissive we have become as a society. For decades, we have systematically dismantled what were once called bourgeois values and standards of behaviour (good manners, politeness, civility etc). We did away with them because we thought they were repressive and outdated. The nihilistic Left in particular saw them as instruments of social control that reinforced class hierarchies. They claimed that these values helped to sustain the capitalist order by encouraging conformity and deference to established authority. Nobody is suggesting that we return to the past and put Mary Whitehouse in charge of broadcasting rules. But the fact that someone like Brand could be celebrated and elevated by the BBC, Channel 4, The Guardian, the Labour Party and the Home Affairs Select Committee (and more recently the Republican Party!!) as a moral and political authority really does say something about our culture and how far our institutions have fallen. What, precisely, did Brand have to offer? Why did we give someone like him such prominence when we could have elevated serious academics, philosophers and professionals with genuine expertise? I am an atheist and a classical liberal, not a religious right moralist. But as Adam Smith understood, a free society depends on more than individual liberty. It also depends on high moral standards and self-restraint that govern how we treat one another. P.S. Before the crank Right gets too high and mighty, it might want to reflect on its own choice of associations. The grotesque Tate brothers, Tommy Robinson, Daniel Thomas and plenty of other unsavoury characters whose conduct and values contribute precious little to our civilisation.

I'm sorry to tell you Cold War Steve but Russell Brand was embraced, annointed & had his feet kissed by the British left - Owen Jones, The Guardian, The SWP, Ed Milliband, The Peoples Assembly, and the RCG all welcomed him in. He even wrote The Revolution book. I was there. Lets not rewrite history lets tell the truth.

I haven't been on this site for a bit. But I haven't seen anyone share the photo the New Statesman staff staged in 2013 of Russell Brand as Christ, and themselves as his disciples. It seems to have been scrubbed from the web. It made me angry then and it makes me angry now.

This is why courts, quangos and regulators exercise so much power in Modern Britain, by the way. It just makes being an MP much easier than having to go through the onerous and time-consuming business of being specific about what your laws mean.
Replying to @CobaltCherry
That is exactly what should be left to courts and experts to prove. All legislation requires interpretation alongside the facts of the case and the intention of the law. This is designed to ensure that harmful practices are discouraged.

Hence why he HAD to be convicted. The 100s who'd stuck their tongue up his bum, or gargled Brand's balls within 5mins of meeting, getting ploughed by his bag of toys nights on end—after incessant messaging/pursuit—can all rest easy. They weren't consuming him: he'd predated them.

Caring, is not taking offence. Providing one's own 2¢ on that which EVERYONE's commenting on, isn't "defending" either. What's this pretzel you insist making, of basic semantics? Do care in fact, immensely: over this feminoid conviction's clarion for patriarchy—you plainly agree.
To foids crowing victory: learning the most FemPopular swordsman of 20yrs's a rapist: calls for aggressive patriarchy—warning of clear danger? Gals?? Useless! (in military/policing/politics: diversitycreed's rooted in universal sufferage) Keeping even THEMSELVES safe? Atrocious!

>>what drives female sexual desire...not a very flattering picture Chat to a pal about crazy gals' power over men🤷‍♂️it's their wild/depraved fucks. RB's in gaol because that pedestrian lay in your bed: is such a shag too. With the right catch in her snatch—like this vile scumbag.
Concerning the Russell Brand trial and conviction, from what little I know it seems the charges were rather ridiculous, but it is hard for me to feign concern. I always regarded the guy as the most obnoxious tw@t. Even worse, I really never understood what women found in this guy, unless I focused on what we know to be drivers of female sexual desire 1) wealth 2) status (especially as a celebrity, despite having no discernible talents that I could appreciate and--above all--3 social proof. The latter of course conjures Rex Harrison's line from "A Hymn to Him:" Why [do women] do what the others do? Can't a woman learn to use her head? Some may say its jealousy, and perhaps it is to a limited extent. But absent the factors mentioned above, I just don't see how both sides of the equation equal zero here. Seeing women like that with men like Clay Matthews III or Christian Bale--that I get. This I don't, absent a deliberate mindfulness of what drives much of female sexual desire. And that does not provide a very flattering picture of women, particularly as so many just threw themselves at this fucking clown. I am rather glad he is convicted because he is and was an obnoxious tw@t who was never deserving of the good life he had. I just wish the modern world-a direct result of Nazi Germany's tragic defeat--would burn down to the ground along with it. I hate everything about this sordid, vulgar mess.
