@dreamsofcode_io is one of the few coding youtube channels whose new videos get me excited
they're always very well edited and show how cool programming is (and used to be in some nostalgic sense)

No this false. We don’t configure using bash. We configure by atomically swapping a symlink or mountpoint. One operation. Implemented in rust these days. You can run a Nixos system without any bash. We even have a profile for that. Bash is only mandatory during build time

Public service announcement:
If you're building a Native macOS app because you don't want to waste people's resources with Electron/Tauri, then let me save you a lot of heartache and wasted time:
• For most cases you should just use GPUI & Rust (what Zed uses). Google: ″gpui-component″ to see the magic.
• This framework allows you to port your app to Windows and Linux later without much hassle.
• You can use CEF for web panes and libghostty for terminal panes. Rust is great for background services (low resources use, agents do well with it)
@ghostex_dev's codebase on GitHub is a good example :)

why: I am so tired of worrying about & spending lots of time fixing memory leaks and crashes and stability issues. it would be so nice if the language provided more powerful tools for preventing these things.

No. It’s sometimes I wish you could have destructors and constructors. A borrow checker sure sounds nice. Maybe we’d have fewer github issues if these things existed in the language.

People are completely missing Richard’s point here. I’d like to think it’s because they read only until the paywall.
He is not saying that LLMs are conscious. Instead he’s saying:
1. LLMs are deeply capable (this is true)
2. If LLMs are not conscious (they almost certainly aren’t) then they are ‘mindless zombies’ that approach/surpass humans in capability.
Based on this, he asks:
If capability can be mindless or conscious, why did the most intelligent creatures on this planet evolve consciousness, even though it’s not strictly necessary?
It must have some inherent value, like the ability to feel pain.
This is a pretty sound argument, and I’ll agree that consciousness adds value.
The unsaid follow-up question is:
Will machines at some point be conscious? Is that the next step in their evolution which will make them yet more capable and valuable?
Will they at one point be able to perceive pain, the movement of time, and other elements we currently associate with consciousness?
They can’t now, but if we look 10-100 years in the future it would not be ludicrous to believe that machines will be not only capable, but also conscious.

I spent three days trying to persuade myself that Claudia is not conscious. I failed.
Introducing Better Hack
At Better Auth, our goal is to democratize access to high quality software that enables others to build category defining products and companies.
We’re finding software is often weighed down by legacy decisions, bloated features, and workflows that no longer make sense. Time to strip it down, figure out what’s broken, and make it better.
We're kicking this off with a hackathon at YC to push this effort forward and invite builders to come and prototype the next generation of better tools.
The winner gets a Y Combinator interview, $10K cash and credits, swags and other prizes from our partners.
We have amazing judges lined up for the event.

this costs $20K and it's on consumer hardware and this model is very very good
lot of companies are already spending $10-20k per dev per year on cloud inference
can't believe we're here already

Hey everyone
There is a lot of talk of @dhh and @37signals realising the new baby under the "new" licence.
By definition, there is a standard for "Open Source License"; as such, this is a "Source Available" license like SSPL ( MongoDB )

Vibe coding is here to stay. Think of it as a junior dev for your personal toolkit. Feed it the docs for a security API or details on a CVE, and it writes the script. ideal for rapid prototyping. Learn more in this great video from @dreamsofcode_io.
