Insulin resistance is one of the most overlooked drivers of stubborn weight gain, fatigue, sugar cravings, and blood sugar imbalances. The good news is that there are simple, science-backed ways to improve how your body responds to insulin. Here are a few of my favorites... 🥦 Eat vegetables BEFORE carbohydrates. Research suggests that eating fiber-rich vegetables before carbs can help slow glucose absorption and reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes. 🚶 Walk for 10–15 minutes after meals. Your muscles use glucose for energy, and even a short walk after eating can help lower blood sugar without requiring additional insulin. 🫐 Choose fiber-rich carbohydrates. Blueberries, apples, pomegranates, sweet potatoes, and squash provide fiber and nutrients that support metabolic health. You don't have to eliminate carbohydrates to improve insulin resistance! 🌿 Add blood sugar-supporting herbs. Berberine has shown promising results for improving fasting glucose and HbA1c in clinical studies, while mulberry leaf can help reduce post-meal glucose spikes by slowing carbohydrate digestion. 🧂 Add Ceylon cinnamon to your meals. Cinnamon can improve fasting blood sugar and insulin sensitivity. It's an easy addition to oatmeal, smoothies, or yogurt. And don't underestimate the importance of quality sleep, adequate protein, healthy fats, and managing chronic stress. The bottom line is that insulin resistance doesn't have to be permanent. With the right lifestyle changes, many people can significantly improve their insulin sensitivity, and even heal prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. If you're struggling with stubborn weight gain, blood sugar spikes, insulin resistance, or prediabetes, I want to help you understand what's happening inside your body and what you can do about it. That's why I've created a FREE training where I break down the underlying causes of insulin resistance and the nutrition and lifestyle strategies that can help you take control of your metabolic health. My mom was once told she'd have to live with hypothyroidism for the rest of her life. Today, she's thriving in her 70s, playing with her grandkids, staying active, and enjoying a life she once thought might be impossible. She healed all-naturally. And I'm incredibly grateful to God for that. What we knew when we said no to conventional medication, is that these medications fail to heal the root cause. They mask your symptoms at the very best. But they also deplete your body of the very nutrients it needs to heal. For my mom, we knew there was more we could do than simply manage her symptoms. We started looking deeper at the factors affecting her health, including nutrition, inflammation, stress, and the nutrients her body needed to function. Her transformation is one of the biggest reasons I'm so passionate about helping others understand their thyroid health. Because I don't want anyone believing their only option is to accept feeling exhausted, gaining weight, losing their hair, or struggling through every day without asking WHY. That's exactly why I created a completely FREE thyroid healing class. Inside, I break down common underlying contributors to thyroid dysfunction, the nutrients your thyroid depends on, and practical steps you can take to support your thyroid naturally alongside appropriate medical care. My mom's story is a reminder of what's possible when you take a more comprehensive approach to your health. This might be one of the hottest takes I've heard from Jordan Rubin to date... For decades, cholesterol has been made out to be the villain. We've been told to get it as low as possible. That lower is always better. And that cholesterol is something our bodies would be better off without. But your body NEEDS cholesterol. In our latest episode of The Dr. Josh Axe Show, Jordan Rubin challenges the conventional narrative around cholesterol and explains why he believes we've overlooked its importance for overall health. At The Health Institute, we look beyond whether your results are simply marked "normal" or "abnormal." We consider important biomarkers alongside your symptoms, health history, and overall metabolic health to help you better understand your results and identify your next steps. Because the goal isn't just to chase a number. It's to understand what that number means for YOUR health. 🎙️ Click this link below or head to The Dr. Josh Axe Show for this full episode with Jordan Rubin: bit.ly/4eO87Me 🩸 Click the link to learn more about the comprehensive bloodwork panel I recommend, including a personalized review of your results: bit.ly/4cPJgYu #cholesterolhealth #functionalbloodwork #metabolichealth

What if one of the missing pieces in your hormone health is actually your mitochondria? Most people associate mitochondria with energy production. But these tiny structures inside your cells also play a critical role in hormone production, cellular repair, and reproductive health. In this conversation, Dr. Ann Shippy shares her approach that focuses on addressing underlying factors that could be affect your health, including environmental toxin exposure, nutrient deficiencies, microbiome health, and chronic stress. When your body is under chronic stress, the signaling pathways that regulate cortisol and reproductive hormones can also be affected. That's why supporting your health at the cellular level is so important. It's not just about managing symptoms. It's about understanding what your cells need to function optimally. 🎙️ Head to The Dr. Josh Axe Show to watch this full episode with Dr. Ann Shippy, where we dive deeper into hormones, fertility, and the factors influencing reproductive health. #mitochondrialhealth #cellularhealing #hormonehealth

Do you actually need a probiotic? Or can you get everything your gut needs from food? Here's how I look at it. Your gut microbiome is home to trillions of microorganisms that influence digestion, immune function, nutrient metabolism, and even how your body responds to inflammation. And if you want to build a healthier gut, I'd start with three things: 1. Fiber: Feeds beneficial gut bacteria and helps them produce short-chain fatty acids that support intestinal health. 2. Fermented foods: Introduce beneficial microorganisms and can help increase gut microbiome diversity. In fact, a 2021 Stanford study found that a diet rich in fermented foods increased microbial diversity and reduced several inflammatory markers. 3. Polyphenols: Found in foods like berries, green tea, olive oil, and pomegranates, these plant compounds interact with your gut bacteria and help support a healthy microbiome. Your digestive system plays an important role in how your body absorbs and utilizes nutrients, and certain digestive conditions can contribute to deficiencies that show up in your bloodwork. That's why I believe in looking beyond symptoms alone. My comprehensive bloodwork panel helps evaluate important biomarkers related to nutrient status, inflammation, and metabolic health, giving you additional insight into your overall health. And we don't just hand you a sheet of numbers. We review your results through a functional medicine lens, considering your symptoms, health history, and how your biomarkers relate to one another. Right now, I'm offering a special discount on our comprehensive bloodwork panel, including a personalized review of your results. One of the most powerful anti-inflammatory compounds in nature comes from a food mentioned throughout Scripture: olive oil. In the landmark PREDIMED study, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil was associated with approximately a 30% reduction in major cardiovascular events compared with a control diet. But here's something I want you to understand: inflammation isn't always something you can feel. You could be eating well, exercising, and making healthier choices while still having underlying cardiovascular risk factors that deserve attention. That's why I believe in looking beyond the standard bloodwork most people receive annually. Markers like hs-CRP, which measures systemic inflammation, and ApoB, which helps assess cardiovascular risk, can provide additional insight into what's happening inside your body. At The Health Institute, we take a functional medicine approach to bloodwork, looking at your biomarkers alongside your symptoms, health history, and overall health goals rather than relying on a simple "normal" or "abnormal" label. And right now, I'm offering a special discount on my comprehensive bloodwork panel, which includes a personalized review of your results and guidance on next steps. This is exactly why I believe we need to stop chasing symptoms and start asking WHY the body isn't functioning the way it should. Despite extensive supplementation, my patient's B vitamin levels remained abnormal. So instead of simply adding more supplements, we took a different approach: investigating her gut health. Here's what I want you to understand: taking more supplements isn't always the answer. Sometimes, the more important question is whether your body is properly absorbing and utilizing the nutrients you're giving it. And this is where functional medicine takes a different approach to bloodwork. Rather than looking at a lab result and simply telling you everything is "normal" because it falls within a standard reference range, we look at your biomarkers through a functional medicine lens, considering your symptoms, health history, and how different markers relate to one another. Because being "in range" doesn't always mean you've identified the reason you're feeling unwell. That's why I'm currently offering a special discount on my comprehensive bloodwork panel, which includes a personalized review of your results to help you better understand your health and potential next steps. One of the simplest ways to support healthy inflammation levels, balance blood sugar, and improve metabolic health costs absolutely nothing. And it only takes 30 minutes a day. Research shows that walking after meals can help reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes, support insulin sensitivity, and improve cardiovascular health. Walking is just ONE of the 5 strategies I share in my latest episode on how to reduce inflammation naturally. Protein-rich foods 1. Eggs 2. Greek yogurt or whey protein 3. Salmon or sardines Protein stimulates satiety hormones and helps preserve muscle during weight loss. Fiber-rich foods 4. Lentils 5. Oats 6. Chickpeas Fermentable fiber supports beneficial gut bacteria and short-chain fatty acid production. Healthy fats and polyphenols 7. Avocados 8. Extra virgin olive oil 9. Walnuts These foods support overall cardiometabolic health. Antioxidant-rich foods 10. Blueberries Berries provide fiber and polyphenols that may help support metabolic and gut health. This one might be a shocker... Cold, raw food. That means your green smoothies and your big raw salads. I know it sounds crazy. I know it might be counterintuitive. But it’s true... When your digestion is already slow, cold and raw foods are some of the hardest things for your body to break down. Your gut has to work harder to warm, process and absorb them. If your system is already sluggish, that can mean more bloating, more discomfort and fewer nutrients actually getting absorbed. And this is where your thyroid comes in. Your gut and your thyroid aren’t separate problems. Up to 20% of T4-to-T3 conversion happens in the gut. When your gut is struggling, your thyroid feels it too. That doesn’t mean you can never have a salad again. It means if you’re dealing with thyroid or gut issues, warm, cooked foods are often much easier on your body. Try swapping out cold, raw foods with roasted or sautéed veggies, bone broth, and warming stews...then see how you feel. If you’re on thyroid medication and still exhausted, foggy and struggling with your weight, your gut may be part of the story nobody’s looked at. If I had just 7 days to start reducing visceral fat, here's exactly what I'd eat... Visceral fat isn't the belly fat you can pinch. It's the fat that surrounds your internal organs, and excess amounts are linked to inflammation, insulin resistance, and increased cardiovascular risk. In one 18-month study using MRI scans, researchers found that a green Mediterranean diet reduced visceral fat by 14.1%. In this episode, I'm breaking down 7 foods to prioritize, the research behind them, and how to build a daily plate that supports a healthier metabolism. Cold and flu season is fueled by more than just colder weather. And I believe one of the most overlooked (and normalized) contributors to poor immune health during this time of year is excess sugar consumption. Think about it. From Halloween candy to Thanksgiving desserts and Christmas cookies, we spend months surrounded by sugar, alcohol, and processed foods. And while it's easy to blame the weather, the time change, or kids returning to school for the rise in seasonal illness, we shouldn't overlook the role our diets play in immune health. Consistently consuming excess added sugar contributes to inflammation, blood sugar imbalances, and poor metabolic health, all of which affect how well our immune systems function. You can still enjoy your favorite holiday foods and traditions. The key is balance. Here's what I recommend: ✅ Pair sweets with protein and fiber to support healthy blood sugar ✅ Prioritize nutrient-dense whole foods ✅ Choose homemade sweets with ingredients you know, rather than ultra-processed ones ✅ Get adequate sleep and move your body daily ✅ Enjoy treats in moderation What's one habit you're prioritizing to protect your health this holiday season? Let me know below. #immunehealth #healthyholidays #coldseason
