The incubation period for Marburg virus disease is about a week, which means this outbreak has been going on for a few weeks to have this many cases already- and likely a lot of contacts may already be missed. Rwanda has strong public health infrastructure. But this outbreak will take effort & international collaboration.
There is a Marburg outbreak in Rwanda
Marburg and Ebola are very similar in their clinical and epidemiological features
So far, more than 25 cases, mostly in healthcare workers, and 6 deaths
Here are three reasons this is concerning
1. As opposed to Ebola, we don’t have a vaccine for Marburg that has yet been proven effective
2. A lot of the cases are in and near Kigali, a major city. More contacts. Harder to track and control. Usually these outbreaks tend to be in rural areas
3. Related to #2, Kigali is a major international city with lots of travelers. So would worry about spread beyond Rwanda
