Biology is incredibly powerful, and more incredibly frustrating. I built/build things. Doing that again, with a new flourish.

A server rack in Singapore runs on 16 million living human brain cells. - Each unit grows 200,000 adult blood-derived human neurons on a silicon chip drawing just 30 watts at 37.0°C - 120 units in Melbourne and a 20-unit rack in Singapore stay alive up to 6 months on a 72-hour glucose perfusion loop - Wired into a physical quadruped robot, the living neurons steered it around obstacles in real time at 40 Hz Tech giants are locking up nuclear plants to feed 1,000 watt silicon GPUs while living human wetware learns from sparse physical data on 30 watts.

I was really surprised how fast interest in this space fell off after COVID. I would have thought we were entering a golden decade for this research and businesses. The reality was a hot 24 months. There are places working on this like @ashishkjha at @BioRadarUSA
For anyone getting into biology, please consider taking airborne disease resistance more seriously. It's a super important area of medicine that is a huge cause of death and sickness but easily gets forgotten. We're likely to get many more airborne plagues in the future due to the combination of not just extremely dense and interconnected society (including city and farm animals), but also accidents from bio research and offensive biotech (both from random people and from secret government programs that can easily get themselves exempted from safety restrictions), all enhanced by powerful AI. Right now, this area is getting way less love than longevity research (which continues to be super important!), but it's an area where there are lots of unclaimed wins that we know exactly how to do (but are not yet doing) with present-day tech: * early detection * passive universal testing * filtration/ventilation/UVC * better vaccines (including making them open source and open science) * cryptography to make all of the above privacy-preserving We can have China-level pandemic resistance with Sweden-level limited intrusion into people's lives, and then go even further. We just have to actually do the work for it.

🚨Hello, 911, I’d like to report a robbery in progress
Trade: Colts have agreed to send eight-time Pro-Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, per me and @rapsheet. Nelson is on an expiring contract and the Colts are opting to get back draft capital now before they could lose him in free agency. But an all-time Colt now moves on to the Seahawks.

democrats: if we take power we will seize elon musk's companies and put him in prison and no, we do not care if he technically committed any crime or not also democrats, somehow: why is elon musk funding republicans?
Elon Musk is dumping half a billion dollars into Republican races. Why? Because Democrats in Congress won’t be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump and will actually fight to lower costs.

Massively parallel assays using oligopools, barcoding, & deep sequencing follows the same story. Replaces 100s of microtiter plates (one assay per well) with 10000s of experiments run in one pooled assay. Work your 🧠, not just more 🤖.

Exciting to see the labs buying teams we admire to put huge amounts of resources towards curing disease.
Thrilled to announce that @OrchestraBio is joining @OpenAI! Biology represents one of the most consequential frontiers for AI, with the potential to fundamentally reshape how we understand disease, develop new therapies, and accelerate scientific progress. We're proud to have led Orchestra's Series A and are excited for this next chapter. @fjeg1987 and @sussan_liu share more on our conviction in the team and the extraordinary opportunity ahead for AI-driven scientific discovery.

It’s been two weeks since we first heard about the death of a young lab worker in Irkutsk We may never know for certain what happened My best read? this was likely a serious biosafety event, and appears to have been contained Next time, we may not be so lucky. So what to do?

I’ve been thinking The Matrix (1999) got it all wrong. The machines were chasing the best token / watt processors and came to the logical conclusion. 🤔
