ALT The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Standing Committee on Travel Forecasting is committed to improving the accuracy and reliability of travel forecasting methodologies. In order to achieve this goal, we have identified several key research needs that will help advance the field and inform decision-making. This roadmap outlines these needs and provides an implementation plan for how they can be addressed.

ALT Text Screenshot: Research Needs: Development of new technologies and techniques for improving travel forecasting accuracy, including machine learning and big data analysis. Investigation of the impacts of emerging trends, such as autonomous vehicles and shared mobility, on travel demand and forecasting. Exploration of the role of equity and accessibility in travel forecasting, including the needs of underserved and disadvantaged populations. Study of the integration of travel forecasting with other planning processes, such as land use and transportation demand management.

ALT Screenshot of text: Implementation Plan: Identify and recruit experts in these areas to join the TRB Standing Committee on Travel Forecasting. Develop a call for papers and/or research proposals targeting these research needs. Organize panel discussions and special sessions at TRB annual meetings and other conferences to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practices in these areas. Work with relevant TRB committees and other organizations to develop guidelines and recommendations for implementing these research findings in practice. Regularly review and assess the progress of these research needs and adjust the roadmap as needed.
