I have a new opinion piece at the The 74 Million about what struggling school systems can learn from the transformation of public education in Denver, Colorado. Transformative change does not come easily, but dramatic improvement is possible.

A lot of attention has been on the problems @MilwaukeeMPS - Denver (along with NOLA and DC, and the ongoing work in HOU) shows what possible. 🔑: Give families choices empower educators get Central Office bureaucracy out of the way, & hold ALL schools accountable for outcomes

""We needed to reinvent systems that had long mirrored and perpetuated inequities in society. This called for a set of pervasive, difficult and sustained changes. Each change mattered, but each mattered more as one of a series in a connected whole."
If you want to learn from a school district that improved faster than almost any other after 2007, read this by two of its architects, US Sen. Michael Bennet, former superintendent of Denver Public Schools, & Tom Boasberg, who succeeded him. #edreform publicaffairs.ucdenver.edu/d…

Scream it from the rooftops!
It is one thing to argue that school systems w. large numbers of low-income & students of color cannot improve when there is not strong evidence to the contrary. It is something else entirely to continue to claim this is impossible in the face of overwhelming evidence of success.

Replying to @dropoutnation
We live in hope and have much work to do. Perhaps if we can stop worshipping and defending what we have already built, we can focus better on building what we urgently need.

In "The Secret History of School Choice: How Progressives Got There First" Forman offered a progressive vision of #schoolchoice and showed how it has always been a means of liberation for people excluded from the American dream.

If reading this story @ChalkbeatCO you wonder how #Denver Public Schools, once a stronghold of progressive #edreform where adults focused on kids, became a district where dysfunctional governance and inept leadership put adult interests over kids See here: educationnext.org/dismantlin…
A researcher wants to study the effect of Denver’s reform policies. The superintendent has qualms. co.chalkbeat.org/2023/6/14/2…

The firing of McAuliffe principal Kurt Dennis doesn't just affect one school. Educators told @MelanieAsmar it's having a chilling effect across the district. The principals union, meanwhile, has filed a grievance. #edcolo #copolitics co.chalkbeat.org/2023/7/12/2…
