# OTD 24October 1901, Annie Edson Taylor celebrated her 63rd birthday by going over Niagara Falls in a barrel and surviving. The former schoolteacher hoped the stunt would bring fame and fortune. Her specially reinforced and padded barrel had even been tested beforehand with a cat inside, which survived. Thousands gathered as Annie disappeared over the 160-foot Horseshoe Falls. She emerged bruised but alive, becoming the first person known to survive the Falls in a barrel. The fortune never came, and Annie later warned others not to attempt it. #OnThisDay #History #NiagaraFalls

A suffragette on the Strand, London, c.1909. This is Vera Wentworth, campaigning for Votes for Women by turning herself into a walking advertisement. Her apron promoted an upcoming march and public meeting, directing supporters to assemble at Victoria Embankment at 12.30. Women campaigning alone on the streets often attracted crowds of curious—and sometimes heckling—boys, as this wonderful photograph captures. A striking glimpse of the suffrage campaign at street level. #Suffragettes #VotesForWomen #WomensHistory

The summer of 1947 was a scorcher! After one of the coldest winters in living memory, Britain suddenly went from freezing to frying. Temperatures hit 34.4°C (94°F) in June, and by August they were back up around 34°C (93°F) in places. What is interesting in this film is the way everyone is dressed in a heatwave! #1940s #BritishHistory #Heatwave

I’ve an interest in post boxes, & often discuss them on tours, like the link with Anthony Trollop, and the evolution of their (wonderful) design. So I wasn’t expecting to learn much new in this article. How wrong I was! Cracking discussion by Patrick Ryan, full of gems.

Hi @Buseireann Is the 132 Bunclody/Tullow bus operating as normal this morning? I heard from a passenger that the early buses didn't show up this morning, but nothing on your website. Tracker for the 9.30am bus from Dublin suggests it's running, but can't track the bus on the map

31 May 1941. Luftwaffe mistakenly bombed Dublin in the neutral Ireland. 4 bombs fell in the North Strand area killing 28 people. After the war, the West German government accepted responsibility for the raid and paid £327,000 in compensation (£7.8 million now).

Hard to believe it's 3 years since I spoke to the La Touche Legacy about the #history of the La Touche Cup, a race first run at @punchestownrace in 1923. The cup was presented in memory of Percy La Touche, manager of Punchestown, 1892-1921 #HorseRacing #Punchestown
With today's La Touche Cup, I couldn't resit sharing this pic from last year's La Touche Legacy Conf. The La Touche Cup race was fist run in 1923 & the cup presented to the Kildare & National Hunt Races in memory of Percy La Touche, manager of Punchestown, 1892-1921 #HorseRacing
