It’s the peak of the dry season in Kenya, and while we wait for rains, our field teams are working in overdrive with a relentless stream of rescues and emergency operations.
But there’s plenty to celebrate, too! Earlier this week, our pilot spotted these black rhinos during an aerial patrol. Poaching cut black rhino numbers by around 98% across Africa, but they’re making a slow but steady comeback in Kenya.
We are grateful to our donors, who allow us to answer the call in good times and bad. Learn more about our Air Wing: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/n…

“The things we do for our cows” 😱 She will stand there overnight he says 👺 Pure bloody torture ..if she is going to lay down she drowns. Cheaper than calling a vet. The reason she stands here is caused by the burden of enslavement and greedy industrial exploitation. #DairyIsScary #DitchDairy 🙏🌱

Baby monkeys should be safe in their mothers’ arms, not subjected to cruel and unnecessary laboratory experiments. Please speak up, take action, and demand an end to animal testing at the University of Washington. Animals are not test subjects. Stop animal experiments!

In Umani Springs, everyone now walks at ‘Mwezi pace’!
At just five days old, our tiniest girl can’t travel very far or very fast, but the herd is very, very happy to slow down to her baby speed.
Every baby born to a rewilded orphan is a miracle, but that miracle is compounded for our ex-orphan mum, Murera: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/n…

Ever wondered what a newborn baby elephant looks like? Meet Mwezi!
She was born under the light of a near-full moon in the middle of our Umani Unit. Baggy-kneed and covered in soft fuzz, she’s also covered in dust from head to toe with earth. Our Keepers rushed to help Murera cover her, which helps to mask her scent and protect her from predators while she is at her most vulnerable.

Around the waterhole, the orphans peek into their future.
The smaller elephants are part of our dependent orphan herd, and their towering friend is Challa, a 22-year-old who was rescued, raised and rewilded through our Orphans’ Project.
Zoom out, and you see wild bulls who tower even above Challa! They’re giving the youngsters space to drink after the Keepers requested them to move off with a whistle and a wave.
Every day at our Reintegration Units, these remarkable interactions unfold as our dependent orphans learn how to live as wild elephants. For more: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/p…

When a female elephant spots a baby hippo wandering away from its herd and happily toddling toward the lake, she immediately takes notice. Knowing that crocodiles are lurking beneath the water, she quickly tries to stop the little one and guide it back to the safety of its herd.
When she finally meets the hippo's mother, the elephant seems to be saying, “Please keep a closer eye on your little one, ma’am!” 😔

They carried our officers. We should carry the cost of their retirement.
After years of service, a police horse deserves a safe place to grow old with good food, gentle hands, and care that doesn’t disappear when the patrols end.
Retirement should mean quiet mornings in a pasture, companionship, and someone making sure their needs are met. Veterinary bills, hoof care, and a comfortable home should be planned for long before their last day on duty.
I believe funded lifetime care is a responsibility we accept when we ask these animals to serve. A farewell photograph and a thank-you are only the beginning.
Would you support a dedicated retirement fund to give every retired police horse a secure and peaceful future?

Imagine going out to catch lunch, only for lunch to fight back!
That's exactly what happened to a female cheetah near Aruba in Tsavo East National Park, Kenya, when a hunt took an unexpected turn.
Instead of walking away with a full stomach, she ended up with a deep wound on her inner left shoulder, likely caused by the horn of her prey as she tried to bring it down.
Luckily, our KWS Tsavo Veterinary Team came to her rescue! They carefully stitched up her shoulder, treated a scrape on her right knee and provided the care she needed to get back on her paws. Her chances of recovery are looking promising!
And then came the most important part of recovery: a little room service, wilderness edition! 😁
Every wildlife rescue is another chance to give our wild a fighting chance.

For nearly 9 years, Synochok the bear lived in a tiny metal cage measuring just 4 square meters, forced to perform circus tricks and constantly transported from place to place in a vehicle. He never had the chance to experience life in freedom.
Now, after being rescued and moved to a new home, Synochok is happier and more cheerful, finally enjoying the freedom he had been waiting for. 🐻💗
