this may be my last tweet before shit goes parabolic. i’m not an ai researcher whistleblower. i work for none of the biggest labs in the world.
there is currently a major bloom happening across humanity. they are hiding this from the public.
we are on the verge of an era of abundance, superintelligence, cure for cancer & so much more.
prepare for the best.
I like the differing opinions floating around the Zcash ecosystem and the thoughtful debate that comes with them.
Iron sharpens iron and there’s clear commitment to building the best possible version of tomorrow.

This is a proposal, and proposals are welcome and should be surfaced and debated. Best ideas win.
This one doesn’t have the broad support needed to make a consensus change. I also don’t believe it’s good for Zcash.
Background: here is the initial rationale for considering a move to PoS by ECC back in 2021. zodl.com/should-zcash-switch…
Crosslink (then TFL) was originally intended as a first step toward that transition. zodl.com/the-trailing-finali…
When I returned to ECC as CEO, I stopped our work on it as I believed it was a distraction and wasn’t necessary for mass adoption. Shielded Labs then picked it up.
Adding a staking layer adds protocol complexity and new security assumptions. The finality gain doesn't warrant the risk. Zcash should stay on Nakamoto consensus.

@zkDragon and @ebfull are incredible. I knew a lot about Zcash already, but I underestimated the magnitude of the challenges being overcome by the zcash devs

Cypherpunk Mining is off to an incredible start.
Excellent fleet uptime and every ZEC we’ve mined, we’ve held.
lmao
it took Zcash devs less than 24h to design against the recent fearmongering
in fact, Zcash will be resistant (on transparent side) by January

Here's our plan for quantum-safe, unlinkable, rotating taddrs. Possible with Zcash, today.
While others are worrying about the viability of rotating transparent addresses, we're already solving linkability.

SpaceX has arrived.
We announced an agreement to acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum license portfolio that will pave the way for @Starlink to become a major mobile carrier in the US.

Attention panicans 🚨
Bitcoin's proof of work has done around 2^96 hashes over all time. Breaking the ZKP's in Zcash requires a minimum of 2^120 elliptic curve operations assuming ECDLP. If you had a dedicated ASIC, an elliptic curve addition would cost around 10-100x more than SHA2.
So today breaking an Elliptic curve would cost around 1 billion Bitcoin-hashrate equivalents. AKA a billion times the hardware buildout of all Bitcoin mining ASICs, dedicated to break this.
If a hypothetical billion X improvement came in, you'd need a chip buildout on the level of bitcoin mining before you can break anything. While competing against all the hyperscalars for fab-space.
AKA plenty of warning time, for a recovery process that takes a couple day response time max.
People read one emotional Matt Green tweet about public key encryption, spent 0 seconds thinking about it, and decide to panic.
Sure ECDLP will be broken with QC's one day. But there's so many levels to this being wrong to panic over.
- 0 actual progress on attacking anything
- We have tons of alternate plans available.
- Quadratic advantage hash-based PKE
- Lattices
- Multivariate polynomials
- A whole field of KEM's from fine grained cryptanalysis. (Fun fact, works even if P=NP)
Sure you can wake-up and choose doomer and be wrong.
We have decades of cryptography to draw from on for all the above options, AND how to build a lot of what we want from UX tweaks without PKE. PKE just made a lot much easier, and less web of trust routing like.

No. See all the discussion of Zcash Quantum Privacy leakage that applies today. Lets say you can break every ECDLP in the world for free.
If you do not know my shielded address, you cannot break any privacy.
If you do know my shielded address, and have a quantum computer or ECDLP break all you can do is learn the incoming payments to me. Not every other transaction you do.
Fun fact, as of Vizor updates coming in a few weeks, all your Near->Zcash receives will be fully quantum unlinkable by relying on the PIR techniques we already rely on for Tachyon.
Replying to @Cryptopathic
This is not true.
What does public key cryptography come in for? It comes in for discovering you received a payment, when you send an address, and someone YOLO sends money to your address, and you only discover the payment from the chain.
In Tachyon we're already moving to new payment flows. The first of which is already usable in @vizorwallet today. It is "Payment Links" which encompasses:
- New user onboarding (Vizor gift cards)
- Any payment when you have a second chat form:
- This includes point of sale systems
- Paying anyone you have a group chat with.
Its merely UX shims to make each of these natural. This does not depend on any public key cryptography.
The second payment flow is repeat payments. Once you've paid someone once, all future txs between you two do not depend on public key cryptography.
The third payment flow is how you make public donation addresses. There we rely on permissionless "introducers" who learn nothing about you. If we lose public key cryptography, its fine, we can start figuring out more complex introduction schemes more web of trust like. There is decades of work thinking about this, well before modern app UX's.
Also losing public key cryptography is hardly risk consensus. Read Yehuda Lindell's replies immediately after. Your basing this off of literally zero demonstrable progress on the relevant assumption.

Zcash has seen $1B+ trading days. Most of that volume ran through centralized exchanges.
Now you can swap $ZEC on the leading Bitcoin DEX. No KYC, fully censorship resistant.
Next step: becoming the home of Zcash trading too.⚡️
