One of the most responsible things an expert, advocate, or policymaker can do on the Uyghur issue is to acknowledge that they do not have all the answers and cannot single-handedly resolve the Uyghur crisis. They must avoid offering false hope to Uyghurs and their supporters around the world, only to leave them feeling betrayed, misled, and ultimately discouraged from taking further action. Honesty, without offering false hope, is the first step toward meaningful progress in human rights.

11 of the 19 participants were subsequently given 5-year prison terms, with the others given non-custodial terms. Haven't done a polish of the English-language verdict yet, but it reads pretty dystopian. Relevant press coverage: apnews.com/article/kazakhsta… (3/3)

A day after the protest (Nov. 13, 2025), the Chinese consulate in Almaty, Kazakhstan sent a note to the Kazakhstan MFA claiming that this act had an "extremely negative impact on the friendship between the two countries" and asking for "appropriate measures" to be taken. (2/3)

Documenting the Atajurt arrests + sentencing has been a slow grind given the massive workload of everything else, but I've finally finished the subtitles for the flag-burning protest/video that prompted their arrest (full version in link): youtube.com/watch?v=bKmTWHx0… (1/3)

@amnesty 's Uyghur Solidarity Month is organised by the ever-dedicated @em_upson because "atrocity prevention must remain an urgent priority far beyond the headlines" and "to allow activists to learn from and support a range of Uyghur people." amnesty.org.uk/get-involved/…

No news is not good news. Uyghurs are not safe in China.
Uyghur on verge of deportation. At dawn German police arrived at an immigration detention camp in Kandern, instructing Arafat Adil to gather his belongings for a “move”. Later was taken to Frankfurt Airport for a flight to Beijing. By @arslan_hidayat kashgartimes.substack.com/p/…
