For my old friends at @BaseballAmerica, I compiled the sizes of each team’s scouting staff.
Note that many teams frequently renowned for their technology and analytics (Dodgers, Rays, Brewers) also have some of the largest scouting staffs in MLB.

Fun fact: The state fruit of Wisconsin is the cranberry, and some of the approximately 250 growers statewide came together to show the Brewers who they are rooting for in the World Series.
(Thanks, Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association!)

Add “get short dudes” to the incomplete list of Moneyball type edges the Brewers & Rays (and Guardians really) have benefited from in the past decade-plus (free article) nytimes.com/athletic/7684373…

Somehow, the Rays (and Brewers) playoff run is sparking a “analytics don’t work in baseball” conversation on this app.
This is some of the most ridiculous discourse I have ever seen.
Using this as a thread to highlight some of the fantastic recent work on the analytical Rays:

Beyond his philosophy that even the most established major leaguers must continue developing, new Orioles GM Jared Banner appears meticulous about identifying and addressing even the smallest issues affecting player performance.
During his time with the Cubs, he once brought in an outside manicurist to address blister issues and, on another occasion, visited the team cafeteria to better understand what was behind players’ weight fluctuations.
Banner brings that keen eye to Baltimore, where he’ll oversee player development and enter an unprecedented leadership partnership with president of baseball operations Mike Elias.
More on Banner’s approach to leadership and PD: baltimoresun.com/2026/10/20/…
Cubs POBO Jed Hoyer on new Orioles GM Jared Banner: “He was a huge voice in the room in favor of Pete Crow-Armstrong. It’s worked out well. Jared deserves a lot of credit for that acquasition and his success.”
Cubs VP Tyler Zombro on Banner: “He’s a firm, firm, firm believer that even major leaguers need to change and develop, and he pushes coaches on that big time. JB reads the player, he reads the personality, he reads the work ethic, and puts a lot of valuable stock into that.”

You already knew Yandy Diaz was going to have his celebratory tomahawk steak in the clubhouse after punching the #Rays ticket to the World Series 😂

I take back every last word of this.
I got my start doing baseball analysis because I wanted to be just like Jeff, and I know I’m far from the only one who’d say that. To become his colleague and then to call him a good friend has been an honor. And I couldn’t be happier for @based_ball to now call him a competitor.

Took a stab at this. See thread for sourcing & explanation of discrepancies.
I think only the tails matter: ATH, ARI, ATL, COL are low (not good!). TBR, NYY, NYM, DET, CLE are high (good!).
~8 teams have low visibility into their numbers... 🧵
"It's this idea that if I can get 4 or 5 innings out of 6th or 7th starter type, I can make him pitch like a 3rd starter."
@enosarris joins BK to expand on stats showing that using a pitcher as a "follower" improves production by a significant margin.

Three teams left, and all three have bigger-than-average analytics staffs.
Brewers: 46 (2nd in MLB)
Rays: 39
Guardians: 30
League average: 28.5
The Phillies have the biggest staff in baseball, and they're already home. Like payroll, it's one input. Everything else combined still matters more.
Drew Rasmussen became a full time starter in 2022. Since then only Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell and Chris Sale have lower ERAs as starters (min 500 innings).
Ran the Sonoma Trail Marathon yesterday. 5000 feet of elevation gain in 90+ degree weather. That was tough. My time was… not good.
