Eryk Anders

“I’m probably a C plus level athlete, naturally.” Eryk Anders made 125 copies of his own highlight tape and mailed them to every school. Nobody called. Two weeks before the season a running back didn’t qualify, Mike Shula called, and Eryk showed up in Timberlands claiming he weighed 215. The scale was broken. He left with a full scholarship to Alabama. He wanted to transfer. His dad told him to stay. He died that night. Eryk stayed, started for Nick Saban and sealed the national championship against Texas with a sack and a forced fumble. Then the Browns cut him, Canada cut him, and he was a janitor at LabCorp with a kid to feed. He started MMA at 24. Two years after his wife paid off his car so he could quit his job, he signed with the UFC. We talk about ten days notice at 238 pounds, knocking out Rafael Natal in his debut, 20 UFC fights, cutting 15 pounds in 90 minutes, buying a house after every fight, and why he retired in the cage in March to coach kids in Vestavia Hills.
