Cassavetes is a filmmaker whose influence is bigger than his mainstream visibility. His fingerprints are all over American independent cinema, even if his movies never became household names. You’ve seen his influence without ever seeing his films and that’s the interesting part
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?
35mm shot of Keefer from back when we worked together at Spec in 2017-2018 (I think?), plus an old scan of a movie pass.

A 4K restoration of Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN’ will be released next summer in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary.

Had a couple Busch Lights and enjoyed watching TUNER. Good movie! Definitely one of the better 2026 releases I’ve seen. We need Leo Woodall in more movies. Lately I’ve been wanting to have fun when watching movies and this was FUN.
