What can we all do right now to get more students the education they deserve, without asking anyone for permission? We’ve developed the Seed Library as one answer to that question. It comes from three observations ... A 🧵(1/6)

Academics:
1. Read this brilliant paper. If it resonates...
2. Visit facultyforafuture.org/ for some ideas on how to transform your research/teaching/engagement amidst the planetary crisis
3. Join us to take part in future discussions on how we can unlock systemic changes
If our universities are to rise to the challenge of tackling the planetary crisis, they must themselves be subject to radical transformations.

A few of our main arguments 👇🧵
'There are many health harms of climate change.'
Environmental and social issues don’t exist in isolation – they are entangled.
We need every sector of society to put all hands on deck if we are to navigate this era of unprecedented instability for humanity.
"The reason there is so much climate protest right now is not because our laws are too soft, but because the injustice that faces us is too great"

If you want to tackle the influence of fossil fuel money in your university, head to @fosfreeresearch
BREAKING: New study in Nature Climate Change shows that academic research funded by fossil fuel companies is biased.
Biased against renewables and toward promotion of fossil gas.
Given Big Carbon's big money in academia, this should raise alarm bells.

'Why scientists are using the word scary over the climate crisis'. V valuable piece from @RHarrabin
To any academics keen to explore what the research says about how to communicate such complex crises in a more emotional way: check out our new toolkit.

Yes! Our toolkit (out in Dec) will help academics orient their research to serve societal needs, share tools to foster more diverse collaborations, and offer guidance on securing funding. It’ll be community-owned and accompanied by a matchmaking service.

With you there Dave. @ClimatePsychol offer up to 3 free sessions of therapeutic support 'to people who are affected by the ecological, biodiversity and climate crises'
Academics: are you angry, scared, perplexed by recent environmental reports? Journalist @Matthew__Green says: tell the media! "We'll gobble it up".

It's very easy to just add courses on sustainability to education programmes – rather than reviewing/rehauling core, compulsory, problematic business-as-usual courses.
At F4F we question the unsustainable principles of existing courses – and want to help academics change them.
« C’est très facile d’ajouter des cours sur la transition, ça l’est beaucoup moins de revoir en profondeur les cours obligatoires du business as usual », explique un étudiant en master et membre de HEC Transition. lemonde.fr/campus/article/20…
It's up to us to make the research funding landscape fitter to deal with colliding crises. Here are six well-paid opportunities to make a dent from @wellcometrust @alicebell – one for any exasperated academics to check out.

"You just can't do it the way it's done in the west". Sagar Dhara: in developing countries, environmental crises must be discussed with people in terms of their lived experience.
Perhaps there are lessons here for the west too?

"I think it's a crisis of community".
We need to find new ways of empathising with each other. As academics, that involves finding new ways to engage with the public.
Next week, we're launching a toolkit on just that topic. Sign up for a first look here: facultyforafuture.org/engage…
The climate crisis impacts everyone, but everyone feels alone. Yet just sharing our worries and frustrations has the power to give us energy to tackle them.

"When does incremental change become systemic change?"
@Matthew__Green on the shortcomings of media coverage of the socio-environmental crisis.
How can academics help the media produce the kind of journalism the public deserves?
We have some ideas: facultyforafuture.org/engage…
Peter Friederici: many academic colleagues, looking at the long history of reporting various crises to little effect, are apt to give up. "The first thing we have to break through is that we can't give up."
F4F exists to help academics through this.

Sarri Bater: "We need to build our muscles for courageous discomfort".
Faculty for a Future exists to help academics do this.

Humanity is facing multiple converging environmental and social crises, owing to industrial society’s unsustainable relationship with Earth’s life support systems. How can academics teach, research, and engage the public in a way that reflects this?
facultyforafuture.org/
The environmental crisis is an era, not an issue. As such, every discipline has a role to play in equipping students for the future. @alisong
We want to help academics who want to adapt their teaching to this world to do so.
