Forget everything else for a moment. How on earth did Kylian Mbappé finish 2nd while Lionel Messi finished 5th in the Ballon d’Or rankings?
After all those supposedly “useless” goals, Mbappé won no major trophies, while Messi won two trophies and single-handedly led Argentina to the World Cup final.
Remove Mbappé’s goals from the World Cup, and France would still have had a strong chance of going far in the tournament. Yet, somehow, Mbappé finished 2nd while Messi was ranked 5th.
Make it make sense. What exactly were the Ballon d’Or voters watching?
