No guest on this week's episode of First Builders. Just @AmberIllig and @Rachtsui on what they're actually seeing after three to six months of portfolio check-ins, founder conversations, and factory floor visits.
What emerged:
→ AI agents cost more to run than the FTEs they replaced
→ Vertical AI keeps beating targets, SaaS is alive and well
→ Oura's users are 70% women, 90% retention. Women's health is mainstream now
→ Detroit is living its first venture-scale manufacturing moment it
Design isn't dead. The last 20% of craft is becoming the only thing that matters.
@georgiarust3 (GitHub, Abstract, Figma Creation Engine) on why AI rewards specialists, not generalists:
→ Anyone can generate something now. Knowing what to aim for is the new scarcity.
→ Code is a material, not a final state. The designer decides when it's done.
→ Figma's "Design Is Dead" hat was reselling on eBay before Config even ended.
New episode: the person behind Figma's generative plugins and shaders on craft, community, and what only humans can build

A $500 consulting agreement turned into $11K.
The other side used Claude to generate 18 pages of comments. Three weeks later, both parties needed a lawyer to untangle it.
@KristinaSubbo (Ninth Circuit clerk, Cooley, lexsy_ai) on the right way founders should use AI for legal:
→ Start with a lawyer-approved template. Never generate documents from scratch.
→ Tell the AI your business outcome, not the legal language.
→ AI accuracy on legal is 13.3% without a human in the loop.
→ 80-90% can be automated. The rest is where lawyers earn their rate.
Health insurance was designed for Fortune 500 HR teams. 70 million+ 1099 workers got stuck with the leftovers.
@og_stokes (Excel Health Plans -> @MolliHealth) explains what it takes to actually fix it:

-> Self-funded plans eliminate the middlemen large employers have always avoided
-> Flat-fee pricing means costs drop as membership grows, not the reverse
-> AI agents that help members understand coverage without reading a 200-page document
One of the sharpest breakdowns of health insurance economics we've done:

You can’t debug a factory.
@zanehengsperger (@noxmetals) is building in a world where:
→ problems are physical
→ downtime costs real money
→ and speed is the real advantage
A different take on what building looks like outside software.
