So my neighbour’s house was on fire. He came running out saying “please call the fire brigade!” I said of course but only if he gifted me half of his possessions. He said no, so I told him to get stuffed. Do I get a Nobel Peace prize?

V pleased with news that @NetworkRailSE has signed a partnership deal with @bluebellrailway. NR gets to recycle old rail components by reusing them at Bluebell; Bluebell also gets promo space at London termini and NR staff can use volunteering days on the line. It was an early ambition of the @Railway200 project for this to happen and whilst it’s not spoken of in the press release I think I’m allowed to say that there’s a hope that this ‘Route Agreement’ is replicated with other @networkrail regions and heritage railways around the UK. Whilst asset relocation to heritage lines already happens a lot, these new Agreements provide a templated framework and process for it, and for other interesting partnership activities too. Nice.✅ networkrailmediacentre.co.uk…

Look, I'm a @Wharton grad and a capitalist, meaning that I believe capitalism and free markets are the most efficient way of distributing goods and services worldwide and providing for the most economic benefits to the maximum number of people. But I'm also a Catholic priest who can see that free markets are not perfect. How can we tell? Just look around and see in even thriving capitalist economies millions of poor people, or, as they were often called at Wharton, the "transitional poor" (as if the poor are with us only until the ultimate flowering of the free-market system). Capitalism and free markets needs safety nets and they also need to be critiqued, regularly. Shutting down those critiques, or pretending that free markets are perfect, helps no one, especially not the poor. But of course who cares about them any longer?
I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning: I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages. We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others. There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job. I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical — it drives creativity, invention, and prosperity. I offered David Shipley, whom I greatly admire, the opportunity to lead this new chapter. I suggested to him that if the answer wasn’t “hell yes,” then it had to be “no.” After careful consideration, David decided to step away. This is a significant shift, it won’t be easy, and it will require 100% commitment — I respect his decision. We’ll be searching for a new Opinion Editor to own this new direction. I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void. Jeff

10 years ago I was still stuck in the query trenches (lost & confused). Here’s a few things I’ve learned about writing/publishing in the past decade 🧵 1. Resilience. Rejection is part of the job. It gets easier. It’s not that your work isn’t good it’s that it isn’t a good fit.

We all agree that this is ridiculous, right? I can understand asking people to pre-book a free ticket for very popular services, but we should never be charging people to attend Mass

“As we read, we became aware that around 80% of the submissions were from men–which is why we now feel this particular need to open a dedicated window, encouraging female writers. This isn’t about excluding anyone: it’s about extending an invitation to people we hear less from.”

1 year on from IICSA report please join us to make some noise about seeing it implemented🙏
#ActOnIICSA Friday, October 20th, 2023, marks one year since the publication of the final IICSA report (Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse), which detailed the investigation into Child Sexual Abuse in England & Wales over a period of decades and proposed a package of important recommendations to prevent future child sexual abuse. At the conclusion of the Inquiry, Legacy benches were installed at locations across England and Wales. These benches provide a reflective space and commemorate the experiences of thousands of victims and survivors of child sexual abuse. This installation was seen as a way of prompting further conversations about child sexual abuse and continuing the legacy of IICSA, ensuring a continued focus on the needs and issues of survivors. These benches are an important visual reminder of the victims and survivors who came forward to share their lived experiences with IICSA and their request for a different approach to addressing child sexual abuse. However, the majority of IICSA’s recommendations have yet to be acted upon. Organisations, victims, survivors, and supporters across England and Wales are coming together to mark the anniversary of the launch of the IICSA final report and bring attention back to the legacy benches and the important message they represent. Calvin Robinson's defence of Fox and Wooton, after their loathsome behaviour on air, says more about him than about 'the woke mob'. It also rather vindicates the C of E's disinclination to ordain him.
