After a long time procrastinating working on my updates, just got my new media page sorted! Check it out for my compiled interviews, soundclips, and videos on human-wildlife interactions research and environmental justice in conservation. fleurygs3.wixsite.com/gabifl…

International field biologists who have flown with rechargeable batteries for camera traps - please connect with me! Trying to figure out how best to get a bunch of camera batteries to Botswana and which kind of rechargeable batteries to purchase.

Isn’t pursuing a PhD supposed to be a time to learn how to be a researcher? It seems at time (at least on Twitter) folks want aspiring PhD students to be fully formed researchers. That’s not how that works.

When I received 2 scholarships back in April, the first thing I thought was β€œDid I receive these because I check a diversity box?” which was really crappy
Sometimes I wonder, am I actually a good scientist or have I just gotten here due to luck and checking off diversity boxes

Imagine if someone stole your stuff took professional photos of it, and then tweeted about how important your stuff is to you.
This Maori treasure box – or papahou – would have held somebody’s most cherished personal adornments. It is intricately carved – papahou were designed to be suspended from the ceiling so that every intricate surface could be admired ow.ly/1KyL50OP4gB

New neighbors unlocked πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ Saw this group of giraffes (technically, a "tower") standing near the roadside on one of the game farms while going to a farm visit this morning in Ghanzi District, Kalahari, Botswana

Just a reminder to folks that I'll be transitioning largely over to Instagram @bescicurious soon, as Twitter continues to be less of an active platform. This account will still exist, but for more active scicomm, or to connect with me, please check me out there!

🎞️Understanding superstitious beliefs about wildlife, mobilising traditional ecological knowledge & practitioners, and examining values were all covered in the culture and traditional knowledge symposium at #HWCC2023: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL…

I genuinely thought that I'd grow up to be Miles Morales, but after I seeing #IntotheSpiderverse, I realize I'm probably Spiderpunk πŸ˜‚

That being said, I think the biggest skillset to build if you're interested in coexistence work is empathy and patience. People will not agree with you. They may not share your values. One of the most humbling things you'll learn is your viewpoint isn't objectively the right one.
This is not a field for people who are not keen on with working with people. Yes, it's important to be a good scientist, but being in this space is often just as much about diplomacy, tact, and people skills, which we're not taught in school. Build your "soft skills". Hard.

If you could tell people one thing about human-wildlife conflict (tips for avoidance, interesting cases, historical facts, etc), what would it be?

What’s it take to be a field biologist? Often years of unpaid gigs & safety threats. Marginalized groups suffer more, excluding many. Let's change this. I’m so proud of this @audubonsociety story & thankful for the time & emotional energy from the 30+ people I interviewed.

Who are your favorite women in STEM accounts that you follow? Comment below do that we can all follow!
If I were to start a podcast I would focus on women scientists who are at the early stage of their careers but have the intense desire to see change happen in this world - and are doing it. No celebrities, no well known names. Only those that haven’t had a platform yet. Would you listen?
