A truly confident superpower could easily have ignored an offhand remark by a footballer reacting to an internet meme. Left alone, the clip would have vanished into the ephemera of social media within hours. Instead, because the CCP is structurally obsessed with absolute narrative and thought control, it proved incapable of brushing off a perceived minor slight.
By mobilising state media, diplomatic channels, and corporate boycotts to demand penance for the word “dictator” (remember, Mbappé didn’t even utter Mao’s name), Beijing inadvertently validated the very characterisation it sought to refute.
