Update: the new Persephone bookshop opens at 10am on Weds Nov 4 at 1 Scala Street, London W1, with the proviso that this is v much a 'soft' opening, a bit like a pop-up, so there may be a slight air of chaos. But we will certainly have all our 155 titles in stock - do come by.
We have some news. This autumn we are opening a second Persephone bookshop – in London, in Fitzrovia to be precise. We had not actually been planning this, but by chance we heard about a 1767 four-storey house that had become available... More info here: persephonebooks.co.uk/blogs/…

Review: Darwin: Janet Browne ***** - This is described as the definitive biography of Charles Darwin - and I really can't argue. It's long but highly readable and full of insights into both Darwin the and and his work popsciencebooks.blogspot.com… #bookreview #popularscience #biography

Christian Moore-Anderson is a major — if for some an uncomfortable — contributor to thinking about teaching that prods beyond simple behavioural norms.
I deeply appreciate Christian Moore-Anderson's argument that education shouldn't force a choice between total teacher freedom and rigid lesson scripts. He shows how England's recent push for "consistency" actually made things worse by turning teachers into script-followers. Over time, this created a trap where teachers lost their teaching skills and became dependent on pre-written lessons. Moore-Anderson explains the key difference between handing teachers complete lesson plans versus giving them high-quality raw materials. When everything is scripted—what to say, when to say it, which worksheets to use—teachers can't adapt to their actual students in real time. They can't have real conversations about learning because there's no room to adjust. His recommendation: give teachers shared principles (like basic game rules) plus quality resources, then let them decide how to use them. Think of chess—simple rules but endless possibilities. Teachers keep their professional judgment, can adapt to their students' needs, and benefit from collaborating with colleagues. Everyone wins: teachers, students, and schools. christianmooreanderson.com/t…

When the first major intake of 29 Labour MPs entered the UK Parliament following the 1906 general election, they were surveyed by 'The Review of Reviews' to name the books and authors that had most influenced them. The results might surprise you.

The table is taken from Jonathon Rose's magisterial 'The Intellectual Life of the British Working Classes'. The analysis of what different readers took from Carlyle, for example, is fascinating. Highly recommended!

Some recent reading. 'The Things We Never Say' by Elizabeth Strout 'The Death of Grass' by John Christopher 'Villette' by Charlotte Brontë 'On the Beach' by Nevil Shute

My wife adores 'Wives and Daughters'. For me, it was redolent of 'Cranford' and contained aspects of Eliot's 'Middlemarch', which would appear seven years later. I enjoyed it more than both of those books, but I prefer 'Mary Barton' and 'Ruth'.

What a revelation 'Esther Waters' was. I haven't felt as invested in a character's tale for quite a while. The fact that Virginia Woolf described it as a 'novel without a heroine' only lowers my estimation of her further.

📣📣📣 1878s STATEMENT 📣📣📣 First and foremost the 7 of us in this group are fans, fans who spend our hard earned money to follow our team home and away like many others. We are nothing else, just fans like everyone else who wants the best for our football club. We are an independent group, who have developed a good relationship with the club over the years. However, it doesn’t mean to say that we agree with every decision the club makes and in this situation we certainly don’t. The potential sale of Harrison Armstrong goes against everything our fanbase stands for, a young talented scouser who is the future of our club. Should the sale of Harrison Armstrong go ahead, as a group of blues who all do this in our spare time for free, have full time jobs & children. It has been decided, as a group, that we will be standing down for the foreseeable future and will not be dedicating a huge amount of our own time to put together the displays that we do that try and generate the best pre match atmosphere possible. We do not feel right now that our fanbase’s ambition and clubs ambition align. When we design flags, there are rules and regulations that we have to adhere to regarding the wording on our flags during displays, we are not allowed derogatory or offensive wording or images. If we were able to get a load of flags in the ground to show our feelings of discontent, disappointment & anger over this whole situation, believe us, we would, but this is something that simply wouldn’t be allowed. We still urge fans to get behind our team on the pitch and sing our hearts out for 90 mins like we did yesterday at Bournemouth. We will support any actions taken by our fans regarding this. Our motto ‘Nil Satis Nisi Optimum’ is the standard we expect!

The thread below is still true today.
1/ How I Use My iPad in Lessons. I have used an iPad to help my teaching outside of the classroom almost since I started teaching. However, the second lockdown accelerated its use within lessons. For me, it has been a game-changer. I hope this thread is useful.
