RustGIS has reached 2,000 GitHub stars and welcomed more than 40 contributors in just two weeks! 🎉 Thank you to everyone who has starred the project, tested the app, reported bugs, suggested features, improved the documentation, or contributed code. Your contributions are helping turn RustGIS into a better tool for the geospatial community. RustGIS is a fast, free and open-source GIS written in pure Rust. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and in your browser, with tools for mapping, editing, analysis, 3D terrain, planetary mapping and publication layouts. RustGIS provides a familiar Ribbon-style user interface, a native desktop experience, and an agent-centric architecture. One of its key design principles is that almost everything can be accomplished through commands, making it easier to automate workflows, write scripts, and allow AI agents to interact directly with the application. RustGIS is still in its early stages and is undergoing rapid development. Expect frequent updates, new capabilities, and potentially significant changes as the architecture and ecosystem evolve. We’re just getting started, and new contributors are very welcome! There are many ways to get involved: test RustGIS with your own datasets, report an issue, improve a tutorial, translate the interface, or help build the next feature. GIS users, developers, researchers, students and first-time open-source contributors all have something valuable to bring. Have an idea or a workflow you’d like RustGIS to support? Open an issue and join the conversation. Let’s build it together. RustGIS v0.5.0 is here! RustGIS is a fast, free and open-source GIS in pure Rust for mapping, analyzing and sharing geospatial data. It runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, and in your web browser. Your data stays on your machine unless you send it to an AI model you choose, and every action is a command you can script. This release adds an expression language for queries and symbols, much richer symbols and labels, and a full set of overlay tools. It brings together 231 pull requests from 24 contributors, 11 of them contributing for the first time. Thank you to everyone who helped! What's new in v0.5.0 - Expressions: one language with functions for queries, Calculate Field and per-feature symbol size, colour and angle. - Symbols and labels: hatch, gradient and shapeburst fills, markers along lines, label halos, backgrounds, wrapping and alternative positions. - Analysis: Intersect, Union, Identity, Near, Merge, Join Field, Pivot Table, Kernel Density and a much stronger Spatial Join. - Safer editing: save edits back to GeoPackage and PostGIS, autosave with crash recovery, and portable project paths. - Web services and time: WMS and WMTS on the time slider, with legends and Identify, ArcGIS sign-in and a Data Cubes pane. - Bigger data: large Shapefile, GeoPackage, FlatGeobuf and GeoParquet layers read a chunk at a time, and PMTiles export. - More platforms: Windows on ARM64, a native macOS menu bar, Docker images and a Qt map widget for Python. terrio v0.6.0 is here! terrio reads, writes, converts and reprojects geospatial rasters, vectors and point clouds in pure Rust, with no GDAL installation and no C dependencies in its default builds. It is not independent of GDAL: its commands and options follow GDAL's, many of its algorithms and drivers are ports of GDAL, PROJ and PDAL code, and its results are tested against them. Use it from the command line, Python, JavaScript (WebAssembly) or Rust, or let an AI agent drive it. Since v0.5.0, we merged 161 pull requests and closed 33 issues, and terrio is now at 223 GitHub stars. 12 people made their contribution in this release. Thank you to everyone who contributed code, filed issues and starred the repo! What's new in v0.6.0 - Standalone CRS engine: terrio-crs 0.2.0 is usable on its own, with geocentric and IAU planetary CRSs, PROJJSON, and new projections including interrupted Goode, general oblique, quadrilateralized spherical cube, HEALPix, rHEALPix and ISEA. - Raster tools: nodata filling, viewshed, pansharpening, blending, palette conversion, retiling and separate raster tiles. - Vector tools: hulls, simplify, clipping, layer algebra, and validating, cleaning and simplifying polygon coverages. - Pipelines and file management: composable pipelines with saved GDALG definitions, terrio vsi (list, copy, delete, move, sync), and dataset file management. - New formats: native DWG and DXF, SRTM HGT, HEC-RAS geometry and plan HDF, GTI catalogs, GRIB through a new pure-Rust reader, and multidimensional mosaics. - Validation: check COGs, GeoPackages and seek-optimized ZIP archives, and repack GeoPackages. - Dataset masks: convert, COG overviews and warping now keep or apply internal and .msk masks. - Lower memory and I/O: color relief, raster tile pyramids and overviews stream in bounded memory, and raw-layout rasters read by window. - Docker: the CLI is published to ghcr.io/opengeos/terrio for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64. - Licensing: the repository follows the REUSE specification, GEOS-derived geometry code is replaced by JTS ports and independent code, and package metadata declares MIT AND MPL-2.0. Credits: this release's nodata filling, gridding, pansharpening and SRTM HGT driver follow or port GDAL's work, and its new projections are computed as PROJ does. It also builds on JTS, PDAL, Eigen, rio-cogeo, ras-commander and acadrust. Full list: terrio.dev/acknowledgements. Not everyone who works with geospatial data wants to work in a terminal. Now terrio has a UI for them. Run one command and a page opens in your browser, with a form for every terrio command: terrio ui Choose a command, fill in the options, pick your files and click Run. Converting formats, reprojecting rasters, clipping vectors and the rest of terrio's tools are all there, with no command line to memorize. What you get - A form for every command: all 150 commands and subcommands. The forms are generated from terrio's own command catalog, so they always match the version you have installed. - Command search: find a tool by name instead of scrolling through the list. - A file browser: pick inputs and outputs from your computer's disk. - The equivalent command line: copy it into a script when you are ready to automate, or use it to learn the CLI. - Cancel: stop a long-running command with one click. - Nothing extra to install: the UI ships inside terrio, and the page loads nothing from the internet, so it works offline. - Local by default: the server listens only on your own computer and every request needs a random session token. terrio reads, writes, converts and reprojects geospatial rasters, vectors and point clouds in pure Rust, with no GDAL installation needed. Its commands and options follow GDAL's, many of its algorithms and drivers are ports of GDAL, PROJ and PDAL code, and its results are tested against them.

Hugely importantly it’s increasingly looking as if China’s CO2 emissions have peaked. They fell sharply last quarter. Admittedly the closure of the Straits of Hormuz had some role in this, but emissions have now been declining since March 2024. carbonbrief.org/analysis-chi…

Solar and wind power have grown quickly in Poland, but coal still dominates. The share of electricity produced by solar and wind in Poland more than doubled in just four years. In 2021, these renewable sources produced just 11% of its power; by 2025, this had risen to 25%. You can see this growth in the chart, based on electricity data from Ember. Solar and wind output, combined, grew very little in 2025, due to weak wind conditions. Solar output continued to grow, but it was barely enough to offset the decline in wind power. Poland still has one of the most coal-intensive electricity mixes in Europe, with coal producing 50% of its power. The country has committed to moving away from it in the next few decades; growth in solar and wind generation will play a key role in this. (written by @_HannahRitchie and @parriagadap)
