In a recent joint interview, Quentin Tarantino compared David Fincher’s approach to cinema to Sidney Lumet’s when asked about Fincher adopting his work:
Tarantino: He [Fincher] is going to do what he’s going to do. He was dealing with the material like he was Sidney Lumet: “What can we get? How can we get the most out of it?” The idea that David was going to be the first person to actually shoot inside Big Kahuna Burger, that David was going to direct a Red Apple commercial. Oh my God, that’s so great. Holy shit!
Fincher: I think Quentin’s incredibly generous, and probably because he’s opinionated, people go, “Oh, those two things can’t come hand in hand,” but they can. I mean, he’s incredibly generous about old movies, because he’d say, “You have to see this movie!”, he’d show it and I’d say, “Okay, what did you like about that?” And he’d say, “What are you talking about? It’s this! It’s that!” There’s a genuine appreciation for things that work and work because they’re new, inventive and challenging.
Tarantino: David saying with a barbed arrow that anybody other than him is incredibly opinionated is fucking crazy. He’s as opinionated as anybody I’ve ever met.
Fincher: Yeah. Just not on podcasts.
Tarantino: (laughing) No, no, you’re smart.
Fincher: I stay in my basement. I stay in my lane.
