most code is nested implicit state machines but that doesn't mean making them explicit SMs is an improvement. the program counter & control flow are literally implicit state variable stores, and using them as intended often make the code simpler research.swtch.com/pcdata
good prompt "find all of the implicit state machines in my app"

that said, sometimes making them explicit is indeed clearer and better, particularly in cases where the behavior is easy to encode into a small set of individually comprehensible and nameable states. so, do it when it makes sense :)

#hugops but also how is this possible in 2026 – at Stockholm, Sweden
We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/

Feeling really bad for the @Tailscale folks Lots of people have no idea how it works, that it's more than just Wireguard, the policy and ACL capabilities, that SSH isn't even on by default... It is wonderful software that someone crapped on, and now everyone wants to roll in it
if you install Tailscale and your impression of it is "wow this is cool!" and not "oh shit, this is just a centralized SSH honeypot?" you're ngmi
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Tailscale is a peer-to-peer WireGuard mesh VPN; its control server coordinates keys/policies only and sees no traffic. Tailworm report details bugs in optional SSH after prior authorized compromise, not a "honeypot". tailscale.com/docs/concepts/… tailworm.com thehackernews.com/2026/10/unpatc… tailscale.com/docs/features/…

petition to remove "netcode" from the lexicon. the term "netcode" gives the impression it's some little separate piece, but for multiplayer games made in the last ~20 years, the fact the game is networked is so deeply integrated into the actual game code as to be inseparable – at Stockholm, Sweden

Honestly true and hopecore. However, it is veryyyy unclear that this is where things will actually go. :/ – at Stockholm, Sweden
when software is cheaper to make by fewer people I actually find myself wanting to spend on things *more* in the same way I like spending on local businesses. Artisanal software where you know the creator poured their heart into it on a personal level. does that makes sense?

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

This is my experience too. It's a huge, obvious effect. Now put this alongside the utterly confident claims that "AI writes better code than you ever did." nitter.gq/Sirupsen/status/211290…
models do not produce simplicity. they hedge, for completeness. that's your value. the lack of this skill is called AI slop.

This is way worse than harvesting. They could for example immitate youtube on your TV, steal the gmail password you log in with, and turn that into a password reset or verification vector for anything: a SIM connected to ur phone #, combine those for a 2FA direct bank login – at Stockholm, Sweden
