Farewell Climbers, May You Soar High! 🏔️ 🇵🇰
We are heartbroken. 💔
From the moment we received news of the avalanche of 30 July on Broad Peak, we held on to a fragile hope that a miracle might bring the team back safely. That hope faded leaving all of us in shreds, and we are left to accept the painful reality of this loss.
This is one of the heaviest losses we have faced in recent years. We lost three of our own climbers in the avalanche, and with them, ten mountaineers who shared a deep love for the Himalaya and the mountains.
Nature offers no soft corners. The high mountains remain inherently dangerous, and every climber who goes there understands the risks involved. From Nims Dai, a global figure in mountaineering, to the aspiring Yukta, and to our own Gyalu Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, and Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, each of them was an experienced climber who knew the nature of the high peaks.
In the end, the mountains decide. We can only prepare as best as we can.
We offer our final farewell to the departed and pray that their families find the strength and courage to carry this profound grief.
Farewell, climbers.
May you soar high eternally.
🙏🙏🙏 ❤️

For Nims Dai (The Mountain Remembers)
The mountains whispered your name tonight,
Across the ice, beneath the sky.
A fearless heart that chased the heights
Has found its rest where eagles fly.
You walked where few had dared to go,
Through storms, through silence, through the snow.
Fourteen giants felt your touch,
A dream they said could not be reached.
You taught the world that limits fall,
That courage can outshine them all.
With every step upon the stone,
You showed the strength we carry home.
The peaks will keep your footprints bright,
The winds will tell your tale at night.
A Sherpa’s spirit, warrior’s soul,
Forever climbing, forever whole.
Though you have left the earthly trail,
Your legacy will never fail.
For mountains rise, and rivers run
But legends like you live on. #Restinpeaks #Nimsdai 💔

The bodies are being transported down toward the Concordia side of the mountain and will be taken to a flat area before further evacuation.

In 2021, Nimsdai and Kili Pemba stood together with eight fellow Nepalis atop K2 singing the national anthem. Now Nimsdai and Kili Pemba are gone. This moment of unity and Nepali pride will live forever.

Jodrell Bank is the most visible causality of UKRI’s short sighted ‘vision’ for science, but as you’ll see below, there are many other valuable UK facilities and collaborations at risk. We became aware of the problem in the autumn of last year. It is not a result of the overall funding settlement for science after the spending review, which was quite generous I would say in the circumstances. Neither as far as we can tell is it a direct decision by ministers (all of whom have now gone in any case). Rather the problems appears to have been caused by senior management at UKRI focusing on short term economic ‘impact’ (whatever that means) rather than doing their job as custodians of the foundations of science. What must happen now is that the new ministerial team make the time (and space ;-)) to review the upcoming catastrophe, and instruct UKRI to do their job and focus on making Britain the best place in the world to do science, now and in the future.

This is the result of many bad legacy decisions taken by UKRI hastily and without proper consultation, overseen by a government department that no longer exists. Surely the new @andyburnham government will want to take time to review this.
