This is Wn 113 Dortmund & the 612 type gun bunker near Escalles. It had superb observation of the sea approaches as well as the coastal road from Wissant. By 1943 the strongpoint commander was Oberfeldwebel Knott overseeing 4 Kompanie/Bataillon 77/Reserveinfanterieregiment #WW2

This is one of my favourite hiking spots in Northern France. Seen here looking north towards Cap Blanc-Nez & the La patrouille de Douvres/Dover Patrol monument. Turning around & the 612 at Wn 113 in the distance. Behind the 612 the OB mit Vf HWB garage #WW2

This is WN 48 MKB Longues-sur-Mer, Normandy and the M262 bunker for Fire Control. I haven't been here in years & the entrance to the M262 has been fenced off for a long time, but as luck would have it the fence was under repair & I was able to have an exquisite visit inside #WW2

A few more parting shots until I visit again. It was a great afternoon. It had been 13 years since I was last at this location so it was a special visit. I sincerely hope that historical treasures like this are well looked after for years to come #WW2.

This is StP ‘Hasso’ in Dannes. Covering an area of 13,000 square meters, it consisted of storage areas & railway tunnels for sea mines & torpedoes. Seen here Rommel & staff visiting the site on December 23rd, 1943. This is a massive site & also somewhat spooky! #WW2 🧵

You have to really look hard for the artwork, presumably done by the defenders and they are spread all over the facility. They are difficult to find as it's pitch black even with a torch! Many tunnels have construction type numbers & architectural references #WW2 🧵

Almost all of the tunnels have markings of some type, many on the ceilings as well, referencing the builders work at the time. A post war map from the 1950's shows the enormity of the site and allied bomb craters visible. End of thread.

This is Flakstellung "C", Wolfsschlucht 2. It provided Flak defense from allied air attack and it's northern most approaches to the Fuhrer bunker complex. It had 6 10.5cm Flak 38 & 3 x 2cm Flak 30 guns. A well preserved batterie with unique camouflage patterns which still exist.

This is Gr 20 / Wn 05 - Pointe du Roc, Granville, Normandy. This sprawling site has much to offer such as this 671 type bunker with camouflage, & how it looked at the time. Intended to protect the harbor & control maritime approaches to Granville and the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

This is Wn 357 located near the small hamlet of Auderville-Laye, on the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy. Here lies a system of underground tunnels that once served as a depot and shelter for the railway batterie Stp 356 positioned to the east.

After the war Topp worked for some months as a fisherman before becoming a successful architect. In March 1958 he joined the Bundesmarine (Federal German Navy). He then spent four years in the USA as a staff member of the Military Committee of NATO.
