Happy to see this massive collaboration out covering 12 different cohorts including almost 3,000 cognitively unimpaired individuals.
Plasma p-tau217 can be used to detect preclinical Alzheimer’s, but positive predictive values increase if +ve results are confirmed with CSF or PET
🚨Paper alert🚨
New publication in @JAMANeuro led by @gesalbla. In a multicentric study, we examined the clinical utility to assess preclinical #Alzheimer's disease in cognitively unimpaired individuals.

The first paper from my PhD is out in @NatureNeuro!
Aging and Alzheimer's disease both reshape how the brain communicates. But not in the same way: aging vs AD related alterations follow two distinct axes of brain organization

Great work from @Wiesje_Pelkmans who investigated the associations between CSF biomarkers related with multiple pathophysiological effects and change in gray matter volumes in early stages of AD
@BarcelonaBeta
Happy to share our latest work, published in @MolNeuro!
We studied associations between latent components from CSF #biomarkers with #longitudinal grey matter changes in preclinical AD, using data from @BarcelonaBeta and the @WisconsinADRC
@Raffaele_C1 @gesalbla @JuandoGispert
A very special one, being the first as last author. And a tough one to get published.
Thanks to all coauthors but especially to Juan and @MontoliuGaya to make this journey easier.
What a proud moment to see Vicky Bikou shining yesterday at #AIC26, receiving the Best Poster Award for her outstanding work on the limitations of plasma p-tau217 for the biological staging of #Alzheimers Disease.

Excited to share our new paper in @JAMANeuro ! 🧠
Combining plasma %p-tau217 and eMTBR-tau243 accurately stages Alzheimer’s disease and improves classification of intermediate and advanced tau PET stages.
Another great collaboration between @WashUMedADRC and @biofinder_study.
New publication in JAMA Neurology! 🧠
In this study, led by @gesalbla, we developed and validated a plasma-based biological staging model for Alzheimer’s disease using two blood biomarkers: %p-tau217 and eMTBR-tau243.

🧠🩸Advances in Alzheimer’s blood tests in 2025 and what’s coming in 2026!
Blood tests for Alzheimer’s disease pathology picked up steam in 2025 and are set to make further advances in transforming the diagnosis and care of patients with cognitive impairment in 2026. Here are my highlights from 2025 and predictions for 2026:
1️⃣ New blood tests
2025: New blood tests including eMTBR-tau243 showed stronger associations with tau neurofibrillary tangles and cognitive symptoms: nature.com/articles/s41591-0…
2026: Studies will examine how to use plasma eMTBR-tau243 and similar analytes to stage Alzheimer’s and refine clinical diagnosis
2️⃣ Improved detection of Alzheimer’s pathology in asymptomatic individuals
2025: Plasma p-tau217 identified cognitively unimpaired individuals with amyloid pathology (jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…) and those at risk of cognitive decline (nature.com/articles/s43587-0…)
2026: Models that incorporate plasma biomarkers including p-tau217 will improve prediction of risk for cognitive impairment with applications in clinical trials
3️⃣ Blood test performance
2025: Meta-analyses demonstrated that p-tau217 measures best classified Alzheimer’s pathology: thelancet.com/journals/laneu…; alz-journals.onlinelibrary.w…
2026: Larger and “real world” datasets will examine the performance of many Alzheimer’s blood tests; tools will improve interpretation by considering multiple cut-off approaches and continuous biomarker levels
4️⃣ Clinician education
2025: Many groups worked to educate specialists on the appropriate use of Alzheimer’s blood tests, including the Alzheimer’s Association, which developed clinical practice guidelines: alz-journals.onlinelibrary.w…
2026: Efforts will intensify to educate specialists and primary care clinicians on the appropriate integration of Alzheimer’s blood tests into holistic clinical care
5️⃣ FDA clearance of Alzheimer’s blood tests
2025: Two tests were cleared by the FDA to support clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s: Fujirebio p-tau217/Aβ42 in secondary care (fda.gov/news-events/press-an…); Roche p-tau181 for rule-out of Alzheimer’s in primary care (diagnostics.roche.com/us/en/…)
2026: More tests will achieve regulatory clearances in the US and globally, especially high-performing p-tau217-based tests; legislation and advocacy like the ASAP Act (alz.org/news/2025/house-intr…) will broaden access to cleared blood tests

Feel free to add your highlights from 2025 and predictions for 2026. Let’s keep our progress going!
Last week we got together to celebrate the holidays 🎄
Nothing like a pub quiz to bring a research team together 🧠🍻
Really loved sharing a great evening together beyond work.
Don't miss out a new preprint from our group led by @Wiesje_Pelkmans.
Here, she investigated the longitudinal changes of gray matter volumes in preclinical Alzheimer's in relation to several pathophysiological changes, such as neuroinflammation, measured in CSF.
