Namibia has been ranked second among the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets, driven largely by the rapid expansion of solar power, according to an analysis by the World Resources Institute (WRI).
The analysis, updated in August 2026, places Namibia alongside Uruguay, the Netherlands and Denmark among countries that have come closest to achieving the pace of solar and wind growth required globally.
The assessment measures the rate at which countries have increased the share of solar and wind in their electricity generation rather than their total installed renewable energy capacity.
According to WRI, Uruguay, Namibia, the Netherlands and Denmark have achieved about three-quarters of the annual global growth rate required between 2025 and 2030. Lithuania, Chile and Jordan were also highlighted for rapidly expanding solar and wind generation.

Namibia is seeking to use deeper regional integration with South Africa to build green industrial value chains capable of supplying products to international markets, as demand for low-carbon products grows globally.
Joseph Mukendwa, Interim Head of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, said cooperation between the two countries could allow Southern Africa to combine its renewable energy resources and industrial capabilities to compete more effectively in global green markets.
Speaking ahead of the African Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, Mukendwa said Namibia's strategy goes beyond developing green hydrogen projects and is increasingly focused on using clean energy to support industrialisation.
“I think for us as Namibia, as I indicated, the bigger play is green industrialisation. And I must admit that we cannot do that if we just look at Namibia developing these projects alone,” Mukendwa said.

Namibia is seeking to link its emerging green hydrogen industry with South Africa’s industrial and energy value chains as it looks to develop regional markets, attract investment and create demand for green products produced in Southern Africa.
Joseph Mukendwa, Interim Head of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, said Namibia cannot develop its planned green hydrogen and downstream industries in isolation and needs stronger regional integration to support projects at scale.
“I think for us as Namibia, as I indicated, the bigger play is green industrialisation. And I must admit that we cannot do that if we just look at Namibia developing these projects alone,” Mukendwa said ahead of the African Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town.
Namibia is positioning green hydrogen as an energy input for broader industrial development, with regional cooperation seen as critical to creating markets and value chains capable of supporting large-scale projects.

Namibia will develop its emerging oil and gas sector alongside green hydrogen and other renewable energy industries as it seeks to increase energy supply and accelerate industrialisation, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has said.
Speaking at Unstoppable Africa 2026 in New York, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the country would not choose between hydrocarbons and green energy, but would pursue both as part of a broader energy mix.
“Namibia having also now discovered the oil and gas, for us it is not a question of a choice between green hydrogen and the oil and gas, but rather a mix for them to complement one another,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
She said Namibia requires multiple sources of energy to support its industrialisation ambitions, particularly as energy shortages remain a challenge across Southern Africa and the continent.

Namibia’s emerging green energy and manufacturing projects will have to demonstrate financial viability, secure off-take agreements and present bankable feasibility studies to unlock investment, as the country pushes to turn its green industrialisation ambitions into operating businesses.
Investors and financiers laid out the requirements after assessing eight Namibian projects seeking capital, technology and strategic partners at an Investment Forum hosted by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) during the African Green Industries Summit in Swakopmund.
The projects span solar power generation, waste management and agricultural machinery manufacturing, with developers seeking financing to move from development towards implementation and scale.
EOS Capital's Tom Vorster said Namibia's green economy presents investment opportunities, but projects must meet basic commercial and legal requirements before investors commit capital.

Namibia targets local mineral refining using low-cost green electricity
Namibia is targeting the use of low-cost renewable electricity to expand domestic mineral refining and manufacturing as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on raw-material exports and capture more value from its natural resources.
Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme Interim Head Joseph Mukendwa said the country's world-leading solar resource and strong wind potential could provide the electricity required to support energy-intensive industries, including mineral processing, green steel and fertiliser production.
Speaking at the African Green Industries Summit 2026 in Swakopmund, Mukendwa said Namibia needs to use its renewable energy advantage to build domestic industrial capacity rather than primarily exporting raw resources.

Namibia is targeting an increase in the contribution of secondary industries to 25% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, as the government pushes to expand manufacturing and reduce the country's reliance on raw material exports.
Under the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), manufacturing is expected to account for 18% of GDP by 2030, while manufactured products are targeted to reach 60% of total goods exports.
National Planning Commission (NPC) Director-General and Green Industries Council Chairperson Kaire Mbuende said the targets form part of Namibia's drive to process more of its natural resources locally and build industries capable of supplying domestic, regional and international markets.
Speaking at the African Green Industries Summit 2026 in Swakopmund, Mbuende said green hydrogen is being positioned as an enabler of the wider industrialisation programme rather than an industry focused solely on hydrogen production and exports.

…seeks industry input to help shape country's green industrialisation investment strategy
Namibia has launched public consultations on its draft Sectoral Transformation Investment Plan (s-TIP) as it seeks to unlock up to US$250 million in concessional financing to accelerate green industrialisation and attract significantly larger private and development investment.
Speaking at the launch of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Industry Decarbonisation Programme validation workshop in Windhoek, National Planning Commission Acting Executive Director Sylvester Mbangu said the investment plan will position Namibia to seek approval from the CIF Trust Fund Committee later this year.
Mbangu said the proposed funding is intended to reduce investment risk and mobilise substantially more capital from multilateral development banks, development partners and the private sector.
"The opportunity before us is significant. Namibia is preparing an investment plan that could position the country to access up to US$250 million in concessional CIF capital," he said.

Namibia courts Brazilian investment in oil, gas and green hydrogen sectors
Namibia has moved to court Brazilian capital for its fast-growing oil, gas and green hydrogen sectors, as it seeks to convert recent resource discoveries into industrial development and jobs.
Minister of International Relations and Trade Selma Ashipala-Musavyi issued a direct investment call during talks with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, positioning Namibia as an underexploited resource market with immediate opportunities across the energy value chain.
“As you know, Honourable Minister, Namibia has made significant discoveries in oil and gas, and renewable energy in the form of green hydrogen, in this regard, we extend a strong invitation to the Brazilian private sector to explore the opportunities available within Namibia’s growing manufacturing industry. Namibia offers a stable business environment, strategic access to regional and international markets, and an abundance of natural resources that remain underutilised in terms of value addition,” she said

Namibia’s green hydrogen ambitions signal something far greater than a single energy project.
They represent Africa’s confidence in shaping the global energy transition, not as a participant, but as a leader.
With vast renewable potential, strategic policy direction, and international partnerships, Namibia is positioning itself at the forefront of clean energy innovation.
The future of sustainable power will not be limited to traditional hubs.
It will include Windhoek. @gh2namibia
