I am heartbroken by the passing of Dolores Huerta. Our country has lost a giant in the fight for civil rights, workers’ rights, and justice. And I have lost a dear friend who inspired me and countless others across generations.
I grew up in Palito Blanco, Texas, picking cotton in the fields under the hot sun. I know how hard that work is and the sacrifices farmworkers and their families make every day. Dolores dedicated her life to making sure those workers were seen, heard, and treated with dignity. She stood up to powerful interests, organized communities, and fought for fair wages and better working conditions for the people who put food on our tables.
She was also a proud feminist and a fierce champion for women’s rights. Dolores paved the way for Latinas like me. At a time when Mexican American women were too often told to sit down and stay quiet, Dolores stood up and showed us that our voices mattered and that ordinary people could accomplish extraordinary things.
And I’ll always smile remembering how every time Dolores came to Houston, she wanted to go to a Tex-Mex restaurant for some carne guisada. Those are the little things that made her so special to those of us who knew her.
My heart goes out to her family, her loved ones, and the people whose lives she touched. We must honor her by continuing the fight for dignity, equality, and justice that she dedicated her life to.
Descansa en paz, gran amiga. Seguiré la lucha que tú empezaste.

Happy 100th birthday to Fort Worth’s own, the grandmother of Juneteenth, Dr. Opal Lee! Texas and our nation are a better place thanks to Dr. Lee’s decades of activism.
A very good boy may have just earned his place in the church choir.
During Mass at The Grotto’s annual Blessing of the Animals on Sept. 20, one husky couldn’t resist joining in when the music began. In a now-viral video filmed by attendee Blanca Gallardo, the pup lets out a series of enthusiastic howls as a priest sings — prompting the priest to walk over and hold a microphone near the furry vocalist.
The moment has become an internet hit, with the Instagram Reel drawing 7.1 million views and 741,000 likes. The husky’s owner and identity were not initially known, though Gallardo said she attended the blessing with her own dog, Phoebe.
The clip’s comments quickly turned the impromptu duet into a heavenly punchline. One viewer, @kindsi, wrote: “The priest sang, ‘all creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and let us sing’ and the husky said ‘HaleAWOOOOOyah!’”
Honestly, the dog was just following directions.
The Blessing of the Animals took place at 3:30 p.m. in The Grotto Plaza. The annual event welcomes people and pets of all faiths and celebrates the “joy, beauty, love, fidelity, encouragement and comfort” that animal companions bring into people’s lives.
And if this dog had anything to say about it, that comfort apparently comes with a powerful set of lungs.
Today, on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, it seems only right that one enthusiastic husky reminded everyone at Mass that all creatures are invited to lift up their voices, even if that voice is an awe-inspiring “awoooo.”
