ZORK Playthrough Tonight! xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1kJzDPVwQ…
"Hello, this is Wayne Steven from the Microsoft CA Key Department. I need you to buy an Apple Gift Card from your local CVS right away!"
NextStep is finally dead. After all these years.
Apple’s macOS is no longer UNIX… officially.
It would appear that Apple did not renew their UNIX certification (from the Open Group) when it expired back on August 29th.
As a result, macOS has been removed from the list of “UNIX Certified Products”.
At this point it remains unclear if Apple not renewing UNIX certification was intentional, or an oversight.
I love watching the old guard argue over who deserves a bigger slice of the giant shit-cake that is the federal government.
Andreas is wrong.
They did not "build their own apps". Any more than I've "cooked my own meals" by putting the Swanson Beef Stroganoff in the microwave.
I know I'm repeating myself at this point, but what those millions of people have done, is VENDED their own applications. They put some quarters in the machine, punched some buttons, and PLOOF: out popped a pre-cooked meal for them.
This year, millions of people who never wrote code before have begun building their own apps. In the coming years, millions more will!
I believe the majority of new apps will be web apps. Native is great, but there's way too much friction for casual developers.
For this reason, I am ultra bullish on browsers. The web will be the distribution platform of a billion empowered casuals 🤓
As usual, this meme suffers from the "here's my opinion next to a famous authority, so now you have to take me seriously" disease.
The actual origin of the quote is from recent remarks by Lithuanian politician Dovilė Šakalienė (former Minister of National Defence), popularized in mid-October 2026. It is not a historical or literary quotation at all.
Which is unfortunate, because @DHH's larger point is actually 100% correct, and only weakened by the false attribution.

Auron is not wrong about the GOP. But I have some advice for young men: If you're waiting for a politician to provide you with an opportunity, you're going to die before that happens.
Young men are looking for a GOP that will provide them with opportunities, instead they get insulted as welfare queens with @bofrench
While all the "right on" projects like @gnome and @mozilla are busy wallowing in their own sanctimonious self-importance, all the *serious* projects like @omarchy, @OpenMandrivaOrg, LCOS, and REDOT are actually busy SHIPPING:

The same is true for the myth, "reduce poverty by eliminating ignorance".
It was once believed that universal education would turn every working stiff into a renaissance entrepreneur.
These uber-cures to chronic social ills are almost always the product of the children of idle nobility. From Pyoter Kropotkin to Allysa Slotkin, all they ever do is tilt windmills and blame "the enemies of progress" when the windmills remain standing.
"You reduce crime by eliminating poverty."
This is one of the greatest intellectual confusions of our century. It sounds compassionate. It feels obvious. And the moment you actually test it, it falls apart.
Let's look at the data.
First, the correlation is real. Nobody serious denies that poorer areas have more crime. In Sweden, kids from the poorest 20% of families are about 7 times more likely to be convicted of a violent crime than kids from the richest 20%.
But correlation is not causation. So Swedish researchers did something brilliant: they compared siblings. Same parents, same home, same upbringing, but different family income at different points in their childhood, because parents' income moves over time.
Result, on more than 500,000 children (Sariaslan et al., British Journal of Psychiatry, 2014): once you account for what's shared inside the family, the effect of income on violent crime goes from 7x to nothing. The hazard ratio drops to 0.95. No effect.
Finland ran the same test on 650,000 people. Same result: the income-crime link disappears when you compare siblings.
What predicts crime isn't the bank balance. It's what travels inside families.
Second test: what happens when poverty spikes for everyone at once? 2008. US unemployment doubled from 5% to nearly 10%. 15% of Americans officially poor. If poverty creates crime, crime should have exploded. Instead it fell. Year after year. Robbery, the most "economic" crime of all, dropped 10% in 2010 alone. Criminologists literally said they were stumped. Same story in the Great Depression: 25% unemployment, and crime went down in many cities.
Third test: take families out of poverty and see. The US government ran a randomized lottery called Moving to Opportunity. Thousands of families in public housing got vouchers to move to low-poverty neighborhoods. For boys, violent arrests dropped at first, property crime arrests went up, and over time the effects faded. New zip code. Same behavior.
Fourth: the claim that police don't matter. This one is just false. Chalfin et al. (American Economic Review: Insights, 2022): each additional police officer prevents about 0.1 homicides. And per capita, the lives saved are twice as many among Black victims as among white victims. The people who suffer most from "police don't matter" are the poorest neighborhoods.
So what does predict crime? The Dunedin study followed 1,000 children from birth to age 32. Self-control measured between ages 3 and 11 predicted adult criminal convictions, even after controlling for social class and IQ (Moffitt et al., PNAS, 2011). Cognitive ability matters too: across 700,000 Swedish men, lower cognitive scores at 18 track with violent convictions, and the link barely moves when you control for childhood socioeconomic status (Frisell et al., 2012).
And here's the part nobody quotes: in Dunedin, kids whose self-control improved over time did better than predicted. Behavior can change. Which means responsibility is real.
Why does this matter? Because "poverty creates crime" isn't just wrong. It's toxic.
It turns criminals into victims. The man who robbed you becomes a symptom of "the system," and you, the real victim, become a footnote in someone else's narrative.
It merges two completely different things. "You're poor, we'll help you" is one policy. "You're poor and you committed a crime, so we'll excuse you" is another. Fusing them insults the millions of poor people who work, raise their kids, and never hurt anyone. The vast majority of poor people are not criminals. That alone kills the theory.
It removes responsibility. Build a political system on "your circumstances made you do it" and you destroy the one thing that actually changes behavior: the certainty that you own your choices. Every excuse the state manufactures is an incentive.
And it feeds the state forever. If every crime is a social failure, every crime justifies a new program, a new budget, a new agency. Crime becomes the business model of bureaucracy.
The alternative is simple and old.
A lighter state that protects instead of explains. The same rules for everyone, from the projects or from a gated community. Certain, swift punishment for anyone who commits a crime. And never, ever telling someone their crime was written in their social condition.
Treating someone as responsible is respecting them. Excusing someone because they're poor is the most condescending thing you can do to them.
It is officially everywhere. You cannot escape it. Not even on 40 year old hardware.

Wait, what?
@michaeljknowles ???
Rupert is 20 years too late. All the necessary conditions and personnel for this already exists in Britain, and has for years. All that remains is the right time. The Left will let you know when that is.
Imagine a million Anne Widdecombes, all getting bashed in the skull on the same day. That's what it will be like. And your press will blame you, @RupertLowe10. And everyone will assume that's true. Because that is what always happens here. And you've given me no good reason to think otherwise.
Feser is exactly correct. But the failure goes back further than most people imagine. They'll point to Voltaire or Diderot. But those idiots were already nearly 200 years downstream from the original turn.
The best expression of the original turn inward toward the self, and the idolization of self-invention, comes in the form of Pico de Mirandola's famous oration on the dignity of man.
It is essentially a manifesto granting man divine permission to exercise his will in any way he sees fit (regardless of what Mirandola claims it is).
Christopher Hitchens is raising the alarm against Islam, because the loss of *that* is what he fears. He sees "Western Values" as a phrase that is synonymous with the idolatry of the self, and Islam would take it away.
Well, so would Christianity. And that is why nobody today has the will to resist. Because most people, are in fact, mostly like Christopher Hitchens, and not even remotely interested in the lives of the saints. The self-sacrifice that is necessary to restore a Christian West is beyond the reach of a civilization that worships the Self.
By all means resist, but if you resist in the name of the false gods of liberalism, Enlightenment, ethnic purity, jingoistic nostalgia, or anything other than return to the Christian faith that built our civilization, you will not get to the root of the problem and ultimately you will fail. What Islamists understand that too many Westerners, left and right, do not understand is that in the long run you cannot defeat religion except with religion. And they do not understand it because they are in their different ways blinded by attachment to the things of this world – economic wellbeing, political power, freedom, pleasure, security, national pride – things which have their place but have become idols. Hence, again and again, they flail about looking for some secular political solution, whether left-wing or right-wing, to a problem that is at bottom theological.
They infiltrate everything, because we let them.
We let them, because we think not letting them is "icky'.
We think not letting them is "icky", because we're all liberals, and have been since the 17th century, when liberalism ascended.
This will continue to happen, in various contexts, until one of two things happens: (a) we correct the error of 300 years ago, or (b) we're conquered by those we "include".
Tech types, of course, will bristle at the conscious expression of these facts, complaining that I've "made it political". They are the Ostriches in this society. Pulling their heads out of the sand, they will complain that you've deprived them of their sand.
Correct.
There is a reason the present government is known as "The Fifth Republic".
Again: This will continue to happen until the British people decide they don't deserve it anymore.
🚨🇬🇧 In the UK, a child at a primary school was branded a racist for refusing to take part in Ramadan
The child said - "Why do we have to do that? I'm not doing that. Do I have to? If I don't will you make me?"
The school responded - "This will be added to your child's behaviour record and the schools log of racist incidents"
Children are indoctrinated
If you refuse you will be punished
The Islamisation of the UK continues
