As this story goes viral, it's my responsibility as a residential school historian and expert on denialism to point out: the evidence about large numbers of child death and unmarked burials at residential school is already freely, publicly available: nctr.ca/wp-content/uploads/2…

1996. It's not ancient history - that's the year the last residential school closed in Canada. September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - we hope you'll take a moment to read about the history and legacy of residential schools. humanrights.ca/story/canadas…

The Memorial Cloth is a 60-metre commemoration the honours the names of thousands of children that died as a result of residential schools in Canada. It is displayed each year as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event on Parliament Hill.

No coroner report, no autopsy, no RCMP contacted, no church records on cause of death, no government investigations No bodies sent home Just a death certificate, or in some cases nothing at all if the child went missing
From the TRC Report, Volume 4. 3200 RECORDED deaths, and in 1/3 of those cases schools never wrote down the child’s name. In half the cases, they never recorded the cause of death. Can you imagine being a parent looking for your lost child and nobody has a record of them?

The act of hate and violence shown by white nationalist residential school denialists demonstrating on the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation is abhorrent, dangerous and unacceptable. This demonstration is a part of the escalating and harrowing attacks from residential school denialists, seeking attention and monetization from the promotion of hate. I join the @AFN_Updates calls for a full investigation, and for governments to take urgent action to respond to residential school denialism with the urgency and seriousness needed to protect the safety and dignity of survivors. The House of Commons unanimously recognized the Indian Residential School System as a genocide in 2022. Governments and leaders must respond to these attacks as what they are - the violent denial of genocide that poses a grave threat to the safety of survivors, families, communities and our nations. Survivors have asked governments to protect their safety and their stories from residential school denialists, which is why I put forward Bill C-254 to add residential school denialism to the Criminal Code as an incitement of hate. This issue is non-partisan. That is why I have offered the Liberals my bill to take on as a government bill and criminalize residential school denialism once and for all. It is incumbent on the Liberal government to ensure the safety of survivors Survivors deserve more than our words of condemnation. We owe them real action and real protection. To Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation, my heart goes out to you after this terrifying attack. I am holding all survivors of residential schools, their families and communities in my heart. I stand by you and uplift you.

Rising residential school denialism and anti-Indigenous racism have created an environment where white supremacists feel emboldened to target and intimidate First Nations in their communities. It’s disgusting and completely unacceptable. I echo @AFN_Updates and Leah Gazan’s calls for a full investigation into the hateful demonstration on the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation, and a swift response to address this escalating threat to nations across the country.

The comments under this are proof that residential school denial in this country needs to be treated the same way Holocaust denial is treated in Germany.
After witnessing the horrific intimidation and white nationalist rhetoric surrounding residential school denialism in B.C., I firmly support Canada treating residential school denialism as a form of hate propaganda.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
No human remains have been found at Kamloops. After 5 years and ~$12M in funding given to First Nations to find bodies, the site was never excavated. Globe & Mail admitted the 215 graves claim was unproven and media failed to scrutinize what may be nothing more than grift. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editor… cbc.ca/news/politics/…

My latest is out via Indigenous Insider. Hit the link below to read/share: They came to intimidate, to incite hate, and to drag grief and shame back over our people and over the survivors of one of the darkest chapters in this country’s history. So why the disguises? Because they don’t want to be caught. They don’t want to face the consequences. They don’t want the public to know who they are and where they work, because they know they’d be condemned and shamed. That’s what cowards do. Chief Kúkwpi7 Casimir urged members to stay vigilant, to not approach, confront or engage with members of the group, and to report anything suspicious to the RCMP. But Casimir was clear: Tk’emlúps’ Truth and Reconciliation Day events are going ahead. “We will not be intimidated,” she said. “This is not going to deter us from gathering, reflecting, or honouring our survivors and the children who returned home.” indigenousinsider.substack.c…

RT @BCSTA_News: BCSTA Stands with UBCM: Local School Trustee Elections Must Not Be Overshadowed The BCSTA echoes the concerns raised today…
📢 🗞️ BC Children Need You: BCSTA Calls on Community Leaders to Run for School Trustee Every decision about how a local school handles a tight budget, a full classroom, or student resources begins with school trustees. As British Columbians prepare to head to the polls on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to vote for their community's next trustee, the BCSTA is calling on passionate, community-minded residents across the province to put their names forward for one of the most consequential and least understood roles in local government. "Being a school trustee is one of the most rewarding roles you can take on in your community. Every decision you make has a direct impact on students, on the quality of their education, the safety of their schools, and the opportunities available to them. Trustees are often unseen champions of public education, and this work truly matters." — Carolyn Broady, Past President of BCSTA and School Trustee, West Vancouver Schools 🔗 Read the full media release to learn more: bit.ly/4geo9QS 🔗 Thinking about running? Last night, delegates of the @cdnsba Trustee Gathering were drummed into the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) for an evening reception sponsored by CUPE BC. The BCSTA and CSBA are grateful to the Squamish Nation and Lil'wat Nation for graciously hosting us in this beautiful space. Elder Joe Thorn welcomed guests to the lands and to the SLCC, which was built to share Squamish and Lil'wat cultural knowledge and to inspire understanding and respect among all people. We also thank the Canadian Union of Public Employees BC for generously sponsoring the evening. @CUPEBC BC President Karen Ranalletta spoke about the importance of relationships and the work CUPE members do every day to help students succeed and achieve their best. #BCed #BCpoli #PublicEducation #SchoolTrustees #StudentSuccess

Our first plenary speaker this morning needs little introduction. Yet the breadth of what he has accomplished deserves to be said aloud, as his story is woven into the fabric of our national identity. This morning, the BCSTA and the @cdnsba were honoured to welcome Rick Hansen, Canada's Man in Motion, who has dedicated his life to removing barriers and creating an inclusive world where people with disabilities can live to their full potential. @RickHansenFdn He shared his personal story of strength and perseverance — a reminder to never give up, to overcome obstacles, and that no matter who you are, you belong. Rick spoke on how important inclusive schools and playgrounds are so that every student feels like they belong and can thrive. He also spoke on the need for the education community to continue to work together to remove barriers and build schools that reflect the Canada we want. To trustees and education leaders this morning, he added: "Thank you, what you're doing makes a difference." A sincere thank you to Rick for the inspiring words and stories. #Bced #Bcpoli #Schooltrustees #Inclusivity #PublicEducation

Alan Campbell, President of the @cdnsba Canadian School Boards Association, took the stage to extend a warm welcome to all delegates to CSBA 2026. “We have brought together trustees and education leaders from across this country, from coast to coast to coast, united by a shared conviction: that public education matters and that the work of democratically and locally elected school boards matters.” You are here because your communities chose you. They placed their trust in you to make decisions on behalf of their children and their schools. That mandate, local, democratic, and accountable, is one of the most important structures in Canadian public life. This week is a celebration of it.” #Bced #Bcpoli #Schooltrustees

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss how our two associations can continue to collaborate in support of BC's school leaders and the communities they serve. Topics included the development of governance and board function guides, trustee elections, and the BC ASBO Cost Pressures report.
