Students exposed to #HomeViolence don’t significantly harm classmates’ test scores or behavior. @gradingatlanta and @CarycruzBueno find that the negative impact on classmates’ grades, if any, is too small to matter. doi.org/10.3368/jhr.0825-144…

Some likely unpopular arguments for why the SNAP program should be cut by 75%:

6. Right-sizing benefit amounts has a greater than 1:1 impact on the cost of the program because 65% of individuals have incomes sufficient to cover a portion of the maximum benefit amount. A 50% cut to the per-head rates, would result in a much greater cut to the overall cost.

7. Obesity-related healthcare costs would be reduced if the SNAP program focused on providing a reasonable amount of healthy food and discontinued its promotion of obesity in the name of enriching corporations.

A good start for test scores in @apssupt's first year. Results released Friday show the highest achievement relative to the state average since at least 2010 (now 0.37 grades below the state average; up from 0.55 grades below average last year). public.tableau.com/app/profi…

Hadn’t done the division in a few years and was surprised APS has budgeted to spend $36.6k per student next year. The budget across funds is $1.8B and the initial allotment sheet from the state shows 48,873 students. Particularly big year for construction but still remarkable.

Love this push. MARTA rides cost $20 each way bc the existing infrastructure is so underused. More stations and more density around the stations is a sensible way to invest in Atlanta transit. Every destination makes the other stations more valuable. ajc.com/news/atlanta-news/br…

2+ yrs ago I co-authored a letter warning not offering Algebra I in public middle schools was anti-equity, as the wealthy could go private. Yesterday I discovered a great example: the main CA Math Framework author put her kids in a private school teaching Algebra I in 8th grade.

[New Post] I analyzed the 2023 Milestones using the same data and questions I have in past years gradingatlanta.blogspot.com/…

I have enjoyed listening to the first four episodes of Nice White Parents. The most recent episode contrasted culture and approaches at two schools in the same building. I was curious about the results. 2019 math achievement shows a smaller gap in the basement school.

To convert the data in this chart to words, you would say for example "The average Black student at SA Cobble Hill scored higher than 89 percent of students statewide, from all races."
Not a bad week for @mackenziebezos. On Tuesday, she gives away $1.7B to HBCUs and other nonprofits. On Thursday her ex announces AMZN earnings, adding $2.5B to her wealth. Overall up $700M for the week. Not easy to empty this safe.
Giving $2k to everyone sounds nice. I can use it to buy stocks. But wouldn’t raising unemployment maximums be more sensible? Those laid off should have close to full income replacement until the path forward is clear. $330 a week replaces income for almost no one.
Zelphine Smith-Dixon: "For kids, you want them to all have the same equal probability of being identified and getting a label." This seems completely blind to the history and present reality of race, slavery, and discrimination in this country. ajc.com/news/local/state-req…

Schools have to meet students where they are and identifying special needs is a key mechanism for providing necessary supports. To pretend that students of different races on average arrive at APS with the same footing is absurd.

I am appalled that the state would push districts toward under-identifying the needs of their students in order to avoid providing black students more services than white students. If the student needs more support, he/she should get it!
