SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

Does it both anyone else that all these texts flying around from the Cornell students involved with this scandal seem semi-literate?

Bo5 is crucial and untouchable, but it seems self-destructive to have one of the most anticipated and exciting matches of the tournament -- Alcaraz/Shelton --- start at 11pm and end at 3am so that not even ardent fans, let alone casuals, can watch.
And it happens constantly.

Why do they not stop at 11pm like Wimbledon ? The players need to protest against this nonsense.

Players needs to take a stand, no player should play a match, schedule to start after 10PM . Its bullshit

Us Duffys, we didn't give up when we got kicked out of Ireland. We didn't give up when America sent us back. And we didn't give up when Ireland then just set us adrift on a log, all right?

My latest for @Quillette, in which I break a lance (as Germans say) for @nathancofnas (whom I've never met or corresponded with). British outlets like the Telegraph and the Daily Mail have wrongly claimed credit for exposing Jason Arday. Jack Grove (@jgro_the) of Times Higher Education looked into Arday in 2025, but that publication let itself be bullied into submission by a letter from sinister London libel lawyers Carter-Ruck.
If it hadn't been for a Substack post by Cofnas on July 21st, Arday would still be a professor. Cofnas, and nobody else, had the courage to publicly condemn Arday's plagiarism and shoddy, typo-filled work. And yet if Cofnas mentioned at all, it's to be dismissed as a "racist" or "white nationalist" because of his unfashionable hereditarian outlook. Left-wing British professors lamented that it took a "right-wing" scholar to break the news about Arday, but none of them had the courage to do it. And nobody has identified any breaches of academic standards in Cofnas' work, despite intense scrutiny.
You may disagree with Cofnas' views, but, as I argue in the piece, his kind of caustic contrarianism is just what academia needs.

Everyone tells me that Elon Musk is a fascist because he could "solve world hunger" for a mere 3 billion dollars, but MacKenzie Bezos has burned through 26 billion dollars of her ex husband's money and accomplished absolutely nothing of note.
.@bundeskanzler, das ist innovatives, generationengerechtes und klimaschützendes Denken. Vielleicht könnte man das als Gesetzesvorschlag einbringen.

The heat-related death toll could be avoided by further loosening criteria for euthanasia to include preventing the suffering of later heat-related death.
