Twenty years ago this week, THE PRESTIGE opened. Two magicians. One impossible trick. An ending audiences are still fighting about two decades later. Nolan made a film about obsession that became one. Are you watching closely?
The BFI IMAX sold 33,000 tickets for DUNE: PART THREE in a single day — a record, two months before opening. Audiences aren't abandoning movies. They're abandoning ordinary ones. Give people something worth leaving home for and they show up early, in numbers. @IMAX Great timing for Legendary to try to take Lionsgate into the fold.
$25 billion. That's what a New Mexico jury says Meta's broken promises cost — one of the largest verdicts in American history. And Wall Street will barely blink. The check isn't the story. 43 million findings of deception is. The fines have become smaller than the moat.
Every great film I've been part of had one scene everyone wanted to cut in the edit. Too slow. Too quiet. Doesn't advance the plot. It's always the scene the audience remembers twenty years later. Protect the scene.
I loved the @a16z Speedrun. So many inspiring startups. The best deals in venture never reach a data room — they're allocated on trust, built relationship by relationship. We at Deep Focus Ventures are thrilled to be backing our favorite four!
The trades called HEART OF THE BEAST a bomb on opening weekend. It’s at $155M and still running. Never let a Friday headline write a movie’s obituary.
Netflix reported theatrical grosses for the first time ever. LA BOLA NEGRA: $277,500 from four screens — the second-best per-screen average ever for a non-English film, behind only PARASITE. The audience found it. @netflix
LA BOLA NEGRA is extraordinary. The craft is staggering — the use of music, mystery revealed at the perfect cadence. Everything in service of story. Authentic and earned, every beat. It trusts the audience, and it stayed with me.
Excited to see this.

Quite the week at the movies. YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING is extraordinary. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is beautiful. LA BOLA NEGRA is a triumph. WHALEFALL announces Austin Abrams as a leading man. And STREET FIGHTER is just plain fun.
DIGGER is incredible. Tom Cruise is truly remarkable. End of an era in many ways as this is the last movie to be distributed by Warner Bros and likely the last movie of this type to be made. Maybe ever. Certainly at this budget level.
Two great dudes.

Really hoping tonight's AMC Screen Unseen is MOTOR CITY. Lots of possibilities...
Thank you @neildevani and thank you X.

Quantitative scientific work here is almost impossible for now.
Definitions are too inconsistent and studies are retrospectively biased vs being randomized or blinded.
@paulg and @davidsenra are the best “scientists” as of today, but case studies vs quantified research.
I feel like there is a big hole in the self development literature/academia. Maybe it exists and someone on here can point me to it?
Here’s what I want to know about:
I built my career modeling myself on those who succeeded before me.
I followed Tony Robbins advice in this regard and ‘studied the path’.
I devoured biographies and histories of the movie business and picked up valuable lessons and insights.
I still recommend ADVENTURES IN THE SCREEN TRADE and THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE and SWIMMING WITH SHARKS. They have so much to teach.
I still recommend Bill Gurley’s talk at the University of Texas on following your passion. It’s awesome. It’s fascinating studying successful people.
I love Tim Ferris’ podcast which is focused on this idea - what are the habits of successful people?
But -
I think we may be putting too much emphasis on the habits of successful people.
It’s not scientific.
It makes it seem like these habits or attributes or practices cause the success.
That could be true.
But -
It could just as easily be completely false.
We don’t study failures. Do we?
There could be 100 people who did exactly the same things as that founder you admire and had no success.
Has anyone studied this? How do I find out more about this?
