Thought I would summarise why there is so much excitement in the space weather community right now. There’s a monstrous sunspot group on the Sun that’s massive enough to be visible to the naked eye (please use eclipse glasses) 🌞 👓 (1/n)

🧚💨DUST STORM Over Russia 🎉🧞The south and center of Russia has been and will continue to be covered by a dust storm from the Sahara - it will “walk” over the region for at least 72 hours, reports the Barcelona Monitoring Center and Phobos Weather Center.

This is what #Freetown's rooftops look like after a #Harmattan dust storm sweeps across the city, with incomprehensible levels of dust.

Driven by strong southerly winds, dust from the Sahara Desert transformed the skies of southern Greece into a scene from Mars.

Eclipse Watch Update: skies will darken at MSP from 12:49pm to 3:14pm on Monday (78% percent of sun covered by the moon at 2:02pm at MSP). Which is interesting, but odds favor clouds and drizzle here, with cloudcover for much of the zone of totality. There's a better chance from southern Iowa into central Illinois, but the best odds for umbraphiles? New England.

Felt the #earthquake?
Earthquakes in the eastern U.S. are felt over a MUCH bigger area than the West Coast.
Why?
Eastern U.S. has older rocks. They were subject to extreme pressures and temperatures. They’re denser and so shaking travels much farther.
Example: – at Sagamore, MA

Minnesota weather is wild but I'm pleased to report that the ground underfoot is fairly stable:
"Minnesota is one of the least seismically active states in the United States. However, there have been at least 20 earthquakes in the state in the last 160 years, all of which were relatively minor. The largest earthquake recorded in Minnesota was the 1975 Morris earthquake, which measured 4.6 to 4.8 on the Richter scale. The most recent earthquake was in 2011 and was felt mostly in the Alexandria area."
