another horrible night of screening my quasiparticles. i have learned my router is IP banned by one DOE cluster and my two other ones are taking turns crashing due to vibe maintenance. at least i get to claudeslop cosmic horrors of code documentation to feel warm inside
I feel like materials science will eventually run out of ideas and be eaten by chemistry. The only useful properties of bulk materials are:
1. being some combo of strong and flexible
2. conducting electrons, ions, or heat
3. transmitting light or turning it into electronic excitations
4. having some kind of electronic ordering with which you can do computation (eg magnetism)
5. superconductivity
most “exotic” stuff is 4. and none of that is useful like how superconductivity is
Well a frankly even more awesome image is this one from this year, showing interference patterns in a single superconducting vortex.
This happens because the vortex locally decreases the superconducting gap, this attracts an SC quasiparticle which is essentially a standing wave
