Super exciting news about Smith, Meyers, @cs_kaplan, Goodman-Strauss's discovery of an "einstein"—a single shape that tiles the plane aperiodically! I decided to create a 3D-printable version of it. You can find it here: thingiverse.com/thing:592330… Preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2303.10798

527 days (4.55 x 10^16 nanoseconds) ago, me and @mv_castrillon’s picture book ‘Nano: the Spectacular Science of the Very (Very) Small’ came out. It explores the magic of nanomaterials and how we can use them to create incredible new technologies. 😃 – at Camden Town, London
Today is "Nano: the Spectacular Science of the Very (Very) Small"'s first birthday. Woohoo! In the past year it has been translated into five languages (🇫🇷, 🇬🇷, 🇪🇪, 🇮🇹+🇨🇳) and received FOUR starred reviews (Kirkus Reviews, BCCB, SLJ + PW). The paperback version just dropped!

C. V. Raman won the 1930 Nobel Prize for his discovery of the Raman effect. Today, Raman spectroscopy helps scientists understand and optimise nanomaterials. Raman made his extraordinary breakthrough after studying the physics of Indian musical instruments.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._V._… – at Camden Town, London

Today I defended my PhD and passed! Now you can call me Dr. Barber 😇 My wonderful friends made me a viva cake celebrating my cancelled fieldwork plans in Indonesia, including accurate topography and tectonics. Just one more reason to do field work there one day 😅 – at Cambridge, England

I made a battenberg cake in the shape of a crystal’s charge density! 📛Name: Battenboronitride 🍰Sponge, icing, marzipan strips: charge density isosurfaces of boron nitride aka BN (chocolate=dense, orange=less dense) 🟡Blobs: atoms (yellow=B, brown=N) #crystalcakes #scicomm

Do you ever regret following reviewer's suggestions for scientific papers? Here's the original of part of our 1999 "HOCI COCI" paper - wish we'd left it in. "You put your left detector in, out... in.. out... shake it all about." doi.org/10.1046/j.1365-2818.…

An @OMG_Oxford experiment from Prof @AngusJWilkinson for students taking part in @OxfordUNIQ. The students learned about fracture and the fatigue of materials and how this links to structure at the microscopic scale. 🎬 | @AngusJWilkinson (@OxfordMaterials)

Latest #crochet project complete and now it’s with its new owner I can finally share! Behold, the #jameswebbspacetelescope mirror in blanket form… Freestyled the pattern off the top of my head but happy to share details if anyone wants to recreate it. #JWST

Hi, a face-centred cubic crystal! Balls = atoms, sticks =crystal directions. Red = cube edge, green = face diagonal, blue = corner diagonal. In #EBSD, electrons in the microscope can't see single atoms, but can see how they line up between parallel sticks! #NPLOpenDay

Today I’ll talk about metasurfaces. Below you can see an example of a metasurface I designed few years ago. Metasurfaces are artificial surfaces which are designed to achieve functionalities beyond the natural surfaces. Let me explain simply what is the metasurface below (1/6)

Brilliant models😍you have many hidden depths V. Your sonobe stellated icosahedron has similar symmetry to the football. Have you tried Kusudama? Columbine in Mukerji's "Exquisite Modular Origami II" is my favourite. amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1517…

Thanks V, I loved seeing your net & working-outs... So I dug out my rhombicuboctahedron notes (from decades ago, ugggh I feel old) - mostly PostScript programming. thingiverse.com/thing:969758 There's also a newer version below. How about 3D printing? thingiverse.com/thing:142801…

🧵Living in survival mode: Survival mode can be thought of as a state of living in which managing each day takes pretty much all the capacity you have. And by the time you are in survival mode, you're already working with a significantly depleted capacity. (1/12)
