in 1930, a painting of two rather stern-looking people outside a farmhouse managed to offend an entire state. this is “American Gothic” by Grant Wood. when it first appeared in newspapers, it was described as Iowa Farmer and His Wife. People in Iowa were not amused. They felt Wood had turned rural Americans into joyless, humourless caricatures. Some were so angry that one woman reportedly threatened to bite off his ear. Wood insisted he wasn’t making fun of anyone. He said he wanted to portray people he considered solid and good, and that the painting was meant to show his appreciation for the kind of life he knew growing up in Iowa. But not everyone bought that explanation. Writer Gertrude Stein called it a devastating satire. Other critics saw it as a picture of small-town America at its most rigid and conservative. And the painting does give you plenty to work with. The woman looks away, the man stares directly at you, and the pitchfork is held with almost military precision. Even their clothes and the house seem to follow the same strict vertical lines. There’s another detail I love: the two figures aren’t a married couple. The man was Wood’s dentist, Byron McKeeby, and the woman was his sister, Nan. Wood described them as a farmer and his daughter. Over time, the painting became a symbol of American rural identity. It was used in everything from wartime imagery to advertisements, political cartoons and endless parodies. So the painting that some Iowans initially found insulting eventually became one of the most recognisable images of their state.
