Yesterday I tweeted a list of things people should know about their utility services.
It's pretty important stuff, and often, the powers-that-be depend on us all just paying our utility bills without knowing the details behind how these entities work.

ALT An infographic that describes things people should know about their utilities. The graphic begins with the heading: "Do you know your utilities?" The questions are: who provides your water, electricity, and gas? Who has control? Are your utilities regulated? By whom? How are rates set? Are affordability programs available? How are emergencies handled? The graphic ends with the text: "The Human Utility protects water affordability for senior citizens and families with low income in the United States by helping them with their water bills. You can find out more at humanutility.org."

This is why you should give money to @humanutility
Just talked to the Interim Director of @MiamiDadeWater Jose Cueto about the language around shutoffs and late fees on water bills.
This push moved them to work on changing the language on bills to reflect the moratorium, that ppl can pay what they can, and payment options. (1/n)

Thanks for connecting us to their office, Mayor @FrancisSuarez!

We also noted that options for assistance on Miami-Dade Water's website are buried and should be displayed more prominently (the front page!). He is having someone change that.
We'll wait to see the bill changes, but glad the conversation is moving forward.

Thanks for responding. But, the problem is that even if your county has a water shutoff moratorium in place, the statements you send people still suggest they'll be shutoff if they don't pay.
How can we get the language adjusted to not say that? @MayorDaniella

With lots of misinformation flying around, people rely on what statements they are getting in the mail directly from the county say.
This is a good service design opportunity to convey that there is a moratorium by adjusting statement language. @MayorDaniella @MiamiDadeWater

If the goal is to still collect revenue where you can, that's fine, but this is a dark way to do it. We have people calling @HumanUtility with total fear in their voices because they are still getting shutoff notices like these.

This sounds like an amazing opportunity. Just wanted to share that the Miami-Dade County Mayor & Bd of County Commissioners issued a moratorium on water disconnects & late fees for all County customers served by us since 3/12 & continues to remain in place for foreseeable future.

Heard from the Detroit Workforce Development Board this week. That's exciting because we at The @HumanUtility could start working with them to try to find jobs for people applying for help with their water bills (if they're interested). Now and long term.

So. Just had a @HumanUtility applicant in Florida City, Florida (outside of Miami) say her water was shutoff over owing $160. She is unemployed. City admitted to doing shutoff in the middle of a pandemic.
Call the water company and let them know what you think (305) 247-8221.

Using my tea time to call and inquire about this.
If you have time please do the same.

Nobody should be doing water shutoffs right now. Especially not in Florida. I’m really glad we expanded down there to help.

A more competitive America would bring in talent from around the world who want to do great things here, make childcare available to anyone, make healthcare affordable, bring STEM and better education to K-12, and improve our social safety net for those in need.

💦 Added #Miami to the list of places The @HumanUtility is assisting with water bills.
Lots of Latinx families down there were hit by coronavirus-related job loss. Water shouldn't be a right reserved just for people with a job.
Pitch in if you can. detroitwaterproject.org/thet…
