'Women and the Piano' is Susan Tomes's homage to the female composer-pianists who have all-too-often slipped through into obscurity. Their often-extraordinary stories are told in the accompanying booklet, and their music given a chance to re-live its contemporaneous lustre.
Written by Mozart in 1787 and recorded at London's @wigmore_hall in 2025, these two well-known quintets occupy a singular place in the chamber repertoire, balancing the lightness of the gallant style with a profound, often searching emotional depth.

On the birthday of Franz Liszt (1811-1886), my gratitude to enterprising pianist Leslie Howard and @hyperionrecords for giving us the complete works for piano. Howard aptly called it “the journey of a lifetime.” Issued in 2011 as a set of 99 CDs, it was a monumental achievement.

Past and present elide in Jan Sandström's memorable arrangement of 'Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen'. The Swedish composer revisits the old German hymn, slowing it down so the tune seems to stretch out into time and space, suspended in a cloud of harmony.
