Building an audience on Twitter is a superpower It makes you an unstoppable force Here are my 22 lessons learned in 2023, I will be using this lesson to grow my audience in 2024. 1. Quality over quantity. 1 quality tweet a day is better than 1000 throwaway tweets 2. Don’t sacrifice your mental health for the Twitter algorithm 3. The Twitter algorithm heavily favours great threads. Not good threads, great ones. Practice writing these every week 4. If 99% of people tweet out mindless engagement-farming spam, you need to be the 1% that puts in actual thought and effort 5. Twitter Spaces is the single greatest public speaking tool ever created. Lose the fear and make it your goal to speak on one every time you have the opportunity to. 6. If you’re not actively trying to make real friends on Twitter you’re doing yourself a disservice. DM someone you admire every day 7. Do it for the love of creating good content, not seeing vanity metrics go up 8. It’s never worth engaging with the trolls or haters. Let them be miserable by themselves 9. Don’t ask for anything from your audience. Exclusively give value. If your content is good enough, they'll like, RT, and tag 3 friends on their own 10. Formatting is everything. If the greatest tweet in the world is a big block of text, nobody will look at it. Use line breaks and white space 11. Being a reply guy/gal is the most powerful strategy when you're under 1k followers 12. Scheduling Tweets ahead of time saves you from thinking about Twitter all day. Thinking about Twitter all day is a great way to burn out. 13. The first line will determine the success of the tweet. Spend 90% of your time here. 14. Some weeks, the algorithm favours you. Some weeks, it doesn't. Don't change how you create content based on this. Keep moving forward. 15. Being kind to others is the best strategy for gaining followers 16. Typos and grammatical errors can single handedly destroy the performance of a tweet (thank you Grammarly) 17. People can easily detect when you’re building an audience just to make money or gain attention 18. Authenticity is everything. We all have the innate ability to detect when people are being phoney. Just be yourself, and the rest will fall into place 19. Try to interact with as many people who reply to your tweets as possible. This is your core audience 20. Keep a notepad on your phone where you put down every idea that comes to your head throughout the day. Edit those ideas down later at night. 21. To be a good writer, you need to be a good reader. Read more than you write. Better inputs = better outputs 22. If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right.
