Why I Am Supporting Mr Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN
I first met Mr Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, about fifteen years ago when I joined the Young Members Group (YMG) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria Branch) under his chairmanship. What struck me was his genuine interest in young lawyers. He advised us, and he opened doors for us. I admired his humility too, because he was always approachable, no matter how junior you were. I have maintained a good relationship with him since, and I have benefited from it in many ways.
When some friends and I joined the YMG, our goal was to build careers in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Mr Akangbe encouraged us to get active in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, sit for its examinations and attend its conferences. Thankfully, many of us took that advice.
We are at a critical moment in our profession. Many young lawyers stay away from NBA activities because they are not convinced the Association matters to their professional and personal development. Mr Akangbe’s energy and the fact that he is the youngest of the three candidates speak directly to that problem. His character, humility and accessibility, the same qualities I saw first-hand under his leadership, are what the NBA needs in a president. His record as Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch shows he can also deliver. What is more, he is promising lawyers with less than ten years at the bar free subscriptions to Law Pavilion and NWLR. As a young lawyer in 2010, I paid a discounted price of N100,000 for my first Law Pavilion subscription, and even at that discount, it was a real stretch for me because my monthly salary then was less than N50,000.
This is not just about one election. It is about whether the NBA can win back the confidence of a generation of young lawyers who currently see little reason to engage with it. I am supporting Mr Akangbe, and I invite all my friends who are still undecided to consider doing the same.

Our support for Mr @OmoyemiAkangbe is a result of deep reflection on the track records and the terms of their offer benchmarked against our aspiration for the Nigerian Bar, the Continent's largest Bar, which future direction is dependent on the quality of her leadership.

Your dues are in one place. Your CPD is somewhere else. Your practice licence is on a third platform. Your directory profile is on a fourth.
To get a letter of good standing, you visit two portals and wait three days. For a document that should take five minutes.
The NBA already has all the pieces. An app. A portal. An ICLE platform. A stamp and seal ecosystem. A Find a Lawyer directory.
None of them talk to each other.
NBA One changes that. One login. One dashboard. Every NBA service in one place, tied to your Supreme Court Number. Delivered in 18 months.
This is what a modern Bar looks like.
Saturday 18 July 2026. Vote LOA.

Nasiru Elrufa’i dressed up, drove straight to the Arise Tv show, and confessed to being a criminal by wiretapping the phone call of the National Security Adviser.
Anybody who is saying he is being humiliated because the law is taking its course is actually a fool.

Vice President, Kassim Shettima was unhappy yesterday seeing the clip of President Tinubu and NSA Mallam Nuhu Ribadu together watching the inauguration of the Door To Door Movement for Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential Campaign organized by Tompolo.
Both men are interested in the 2031 Presidential election race.
At the moment, Nuhu Ribadu has an edge due to his close relationship with the President, he’s more influential and powerful than the VP in this administration.
Some of the inner caucus of the President have tried to get Ribadu fired by telling the President he’s over crossing his boundaries but the President doesn’t buy into it.
Shettima and the President are recently just getting along, the VP was worried about not getting carried along and the President not giving him enough power to operate.
The VP’s choice to be Governor of Borno State in 2027 failed, the Governor of the state, Zulum succeeded in picking his successor, it almost got heated between both men but the President intervened and told his VP to allow the Governor have his way, the VP’s preferred candidate was compensated with an automatic ticket for senate.

It is becoming increasingly concerning that the conversation surrounding Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s case is shifting away from the principles of justice and into the realm of personal vendettas.
Rather than discussing the facts before the court or whether due process is being followed, many people have reduced the debate to one argument: “He should remain there because of what he allegedly did to others when he was in power.”
That line of reasoning is dangerous. Leadership is a responsibility to the state, not to individuals. Every public office holder makes decisions that some people will applaud and others will resent.
It is impossible to govern in a way that satisfies everyone. If we begin to decide who deserves justice based on popularity or past political disagreements, then justice itself loses its meaning.
The true test of any democracy is not how it treats those government agree with, but how it treats those who oppose the government. Justice must be protected at all costs, regardless of who the accused is. The rule of law cannot become a tool for settling political scores.
Beyond emotions and political affiliations, there are legitimate questions that deserve answers.
Why has the Kaduna State High Court continued to deny El-Rufai bail outrightly, when he submitted himself willingly, and he has never jumped bail before?
Why was he kept in custody for such a long period before being brought before a court? What legal justification exists for those decisions? These are not questions of loyalty to El-Rufai, they are questions about the integrity of our justice system.
Whether you support or oppose him politically is beside the point. Today it may be El-Rufai. Tomorrow it could be someone else.
If due process is weakened for one person because the government dislike them, we create a precedent that can eventually be used against anyone.
A nation governed by the rule of law must ensure that justice is based on facts, evidence, and the Constitution, not on emotions or revenge.

On his immediate left is Hadiza Bala Usman.
She served as his Chief of Staff. He later recommended her for appointment as Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority. She was removed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, but before leaving office in 2023, he reinstated her.
Today, she serves as Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy and Coordination and is a member of the Federal Executive Council.
Next to her is Uba Sani.
He was his Political Adviser. He later got the opportunity to represent Kaduna Central in the Senate, and eventually succeeded him as Governor of Kaduna State.
Mallam made great sacrifices for both of them.
Yet today, while he is in prison, they appear to have distanced themselves from him.
Lesson: In life, the best investment you can make is in yourself.

This is Mr John Danfulani , a lecturer at the Kaduna State University. This picture was taken in 2016 when he was released from prison. His only 'crime' was criticizing the excesses of Elrufai when he was governor of Kaduna State. His wife, relative and friends pleaded for the innocent man to be released, but Elrufai refused.
Now, Elrufai's wife that I saw yesterday whining and shedding tears, or whatever was on her face, never urged her husband to release Mr Danfulani when his wife was begging for his release. Felt nothing for another man's wife when she was begging for her husband's freedom.
It's good to feel what others felt! Karma is a black mamba.
