Munira is a security practitioner based in KL, founder and Executive Director of Chasseur Group, and a Senior Fellow at Verve Research. This is her field of expertise. There is a point she makes about children growing up during the pandemic that really stayed with me. Sean was ten when the pandemic started. Children around his age are teenagers now. At an age when they should have been spending time with friends and learning to get along with others, so much of their world moved online. We went through the pandemic too, but we were adults. They were still growing up. And when you read about how some online communities encourage young people to admire violent people, you begin to understand why we need to pay attention. Of course, this doesn’t mean every child who is lonely or spends time online will become violent. But do we know who they turn to when they feel left out? Who is listening to them? What are those people telling them? We often talk about what we were like at their age. But their childhood has been so different from ours. We need to listen and try to understand what growing up is like for them.
