If Ballon d’Or voters are in fact judging the biggest performances on the biggest stage, I hope they watch Messi’s full World Cup body of work side by side with the other top candidates. Goals and assists are only part of the story. Argentina’s entire attack flowed through Messi - progression, chance creation, line breaking passes, dribbles, combinations, etc. Even goals where he didn’t get the final assist but was very much involved in creating the sequence.
